Responsibilities

The CRN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics in addition to the Clinical Research Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The CRN serves as a coordinator, clinical nurse, educator, consultant, and leader in clinical research.

Applies experience and knowledge to execute complex research protocols within the clinical setting. Interacts daily with physicians, nurse practitioners, management, staff, patients, and families to promote clinical expertise, patient safety, resource utilization and adherence to regulations for research. Partners with the patient and care team members to manage complex physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual symptoms of patients and families. Uses advanced assessment skills to identify problems and develop a comprehensive, individualized plan of care.

Provides comprehensive care based on the principles of growth and development across the lifespan of patients served. Provision of care is given as described in the Honor Health patient care policies and procedures in addition to unit specific department operating policies. The CRN III supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills. The CRN III serves as a preceptor to new hires and students and maintains current training through Honor Health.

The CRN assists the staff and students to seek and complete the tasks required to complete their competency skills. The CRN continues to enhance their knowledge in the nursing management and care of patient problems and conditions as required. The CRN may continue to improve the patient experience, clinical outcomes and works to promote a healthy work environment. The CRN practices theory‑based nursing that is evidence based utilizing a Shared Governance model for decision‑making.

The CRN III serves as a team lead and is also an active member of a council or committee at the campus level or higher.

Essential Functions
  • Possess the knowledge of how to collect health data in a systematic and ongoing manner, prioritizing data collection as determined by the patient’s immediate condition or needs and involving the family. Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and utilize the nursing diagnosis to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an appropriate patient plan of care that is family centered, developmentally and age‑appropriate, and culturally relevant.
