Responsibilities

Job Summary

The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nursing and the Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow-up and rehabilitation.

The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, including activities such as administering medication, monitoring dosages, managing intravenous (IV) lines, providing therapies and treatments, observing and recording patient responses, and consulting with physicians and other clinicians. The RN teaches patients and their families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home‑care needs, nutrition and exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy.

The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides regarding patient care and delegates when appropriate.

The RN supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills, precepts new hire staff and students, assists staff in completing competency tasks, and continually enhances knowledge in nursing management and patient care. The RN works to improve patient experience, clinical outcomes, and promotes a healthy work environment, applying evidence‑based practice within a Shared Governance model for decision‑making.

All RN staff who have direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must have knowledge of:

  • Stroke symptoms and warning signs
  • Protocols and pathways for evaluation and management of stroke patients
  • NIHSS
  • Stroke Alert activation and protocol
  • Stroke quality indicators
  • Available stroke patient education materials and community resources
  • Educational requirements
  • Stroke Center website resources
Essential Functions
  • Collect health data systematically, prioritizing patient needs and involving family. Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and develop, implement, evaluate, and revise patient plans of care that are family‑centered, developmentally and age‑appropriate, and culturally relevant.
  • Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient’s health problems. Develop and implement evidence‑based, family‑centered care plans, ensuring continuity of care.
  • Implement interventions, including initiating treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures. Provide nursing care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs of patients and families.
  • Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes, document observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures, and monitoring data in a retrievable format, and continually assess the quality and effectiveness of care plans to promote cost‑effective, high‑quality healthcare.
  • Self‑evaluate nursing practice in relation to professional standards, statutes, regulations, and departmental policies, maintaining current knowledge and systematically evaluating practice quality.
  • Integrate ethical principles into all aspects of practice and enhance knowledge of cultural and diversity needs for specific populations.
  • Collaborate with peers and other health‑care providers through role‑modeling, fostering relationships, and participating in preceptor and mentor programs to create an environment of quality practice.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care delivery. Engage patients, families, and providers in care delivery.
  • Develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care, identify practice changes, and facilitate adoption and adaptation of new practices. Engage in research and support systematic evaluation of clinical, educational, and managerial data.
