Job Summary

The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN records patients' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan. The plan may include activities such as administering medications (careful checking of dosages and avoiding interactions), starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines for fluids, medications, blood and blood products, administering therapies and treatments, observing and recording patient status, and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians.

The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post-treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition and exercise programs, and self-administration of medications and therapy. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides and delegates appropriately.

The RN supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge and skills. The RN precepts new hires and students, assists staff and students to complete tasks to achieve competencies, and continues to enhance knowledge in nursing management and care of patient problems as required. The RN may work to improve patient experience, clinical outcomes and the work environment. Practices theory-based, evidence-based nursing within a Shared Governance model for decision-making.

All RN staff with direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must have knowledge of: stroke symptoms and warning signs, protocols and pathways to identify, evaluate and manage stroke patients, NIHSS, Stroke Alert activation and protocol, stroke quality indicators, stroke patient education materials and community resources, educational requirements, and stroke center resources.

• Possess knowledge to collect health data systematically and continuously, prioritize data based on the patient’s condition, and involve the family. Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and develop, implement, evaluate and revise a patient-centered, developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant plan of care.
• Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient; develop care plans that are current, evidence-based, and family-centered, ensuring continuity of care.
• Implement interventions in the plan of care; initiate treatments, medications, and emergency measures based on standing orders and policies. Provide comprehensive nursing care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social-cultural needs of patient and family.
• Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes; document observations, interventions, and data; continually assess quality and effectiveness of the care plan to optimize outcomes and cost-effective care.
• Evaluate personal nursing practice against professional standards and applicable regulations; maintain current knowledge in nursing practice.
• Integrate ethical principles and cultural diversity considerations into practice; collaborate with others in professional development and mentoring.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team in planning and evaluating patient care; engage with patient and family for care delivery decisions.
• Develop and evaluate evidence-based standards of care; participate in research-informed practice and apply improvements to patient outcomes.
• Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost when planning and delivering patient care, utilizing resources efficiently.

• Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) - Preferred
• All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire OR have 5+ years RN experience at the time of hire (including direct or indirect RN roles) - Required
• Associate's degree or Diploma in Nursing; all staff caring for stroke patients should refer to the stroke addendum for education requirements prior to start

• 10+ months med-surg or acute specialty setting

• 1 year RN experience for all Float Positions
  - Required

• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification; unit-specific certification as required by specialty area
  - Required
• Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona (or compact state) Upon Hire
  - Required
• National certification for unit-specific patient population
  - Preferred
