The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN possesses knowledge of nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures applicable to the patient population. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, performs diagnostic tests, operates medical equipment, administers treatments and medications, and assists with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes or contributes to a care plan that may include medication administration, intravenous line management, therapies, observations, and consultation with physicians and other clinicians.

The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses, explains post‑treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise, and self‑administration of medication and therapy. The RN directs licensed practical nurses and nursing aides, delegates tasks, and supports staff and students in achieving competency. The RN continues to enhance knowledge in nursing management and patient care, promotes clinical improvement, and works to improve patient experiences and outcomes.

Nursing practice is theory‑based, evidence‑based, and utilizes a shared governance model for decision‑making.

All RN staff who have direct responsibility for stroke patients must have knowledge of the following:

• Stroke symptoms and warning signs
• Protocols and pathways to identify, evaluate, and manage stroke patients
• NIHSS
• Stroke alert activation and protocol
• Stroke quality indicators
• Available stroke patient education materials and community resources
• Educational requirements
• Stroke Center website resources

Possess knowledge of systematic health data collection and prioritize data collection based on patient condition and family involvement.

Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and use nursing diagnoses to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise individualized, family‑centered, culturally relevant care plans.

Identify expected outcomes and develop plans reflecting evidence‑based nursing practice.

Implement interventions, initiate treatments and medications, and perform emergency measures as per standing orders.

Provide care that meets physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs using a family‑centered approach.

Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes, document observations, interventions, therapeutic measures, and multi‑system monitoring data.

Continuously evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the care plan and nursing practice.

Integrate ethical principles into all aspects of practice, enhancing knowledge of culture and diversity.

Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members in patient assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Participate in evidence‑based research to identify strategies for improving practice and patient outcomes.

Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering care using available resources efficiently.

Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) – Preferred.

Diploma or Associate’s degree in Nursing – Required. All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have five or more years of RN experience at hire.

Stroke‑specific education requirements apply to staff responsible for stroke patient care; see addendum prior to start.

More than 10 months in med‑surg or acute specialty setting – Required.

One year RN experience for all float positions – Required.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area – Required.

Registered Nurse (RN) state or compact state licensure in Arizona upon hire – Required.

National certification for unit‑specific patient population – Preferred.
