Responsibilities

Job Summary: The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, performs diagnostic tests, administers treatment and medications, and supports patient follow-up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes or contributes to a care plan, which may include medication administration, IV line management, therapies and treatments, patient observation, and consultation with physicians and other clinicians.

The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explain post‑treatment and home care needs, and administer medication and therapy. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides, delegates appropriately, assists staff in completing competency tasks, shares knowledge, and precepts new hires and students.

Essential Functions
  • Collect health data systematically, prioritize as needed, and involve the family.
  • Analyze assessment data to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise an evidence‑based, family‑centered plan of care.
  • Identify individualized outcomes and develop care plans reflecting current nursing practice.
  • Initiate treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures using standing orders and policies.
  • Care for the patient’s physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs with a family‑centered approach.
  • Document observations, interventions, therapeutic measures, and monitoring data in a retrievable form.
  • Continuously evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and maintain current knowledge.
  • Integrate ethical principles and enhance knowledge of culture and diversity needs.
  • Collaborate with peers and multidisciplinary teams to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Promote evidence‑based practice, support research, and adapt nursing practices to improve outcomes.
  • Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost when planning and delivering patient care.
Education
  • Other / Certificate: All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5+ years of RN experience. (Required)
  • Associates or Diploma in Nursing: Required for staff with direct responsibility for stroke patients; refer to addendum for stroke‑specific education pre‑start.
  • Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN): Preferred.
Experience
  • Other >10 months in med‑surg or acute specialty setting. (Required)
  • 1 year RN experience for all Float Positions. (Required)
License and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS):
    Certification in BLS training course and unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area. (Required)
  • Registered Nurse (RN):
    Arizona State or Compact State licensure upon hire. (Required)
  • National certification for unit‑specific patient population. (Preferred)
