Under the supervision of an RN preceptor, our nurse externs will have the chance to practice various skills, including: assessing patients, administering medications, adjusting IV pump rates or devices, parenteral fluids, blood products or IV flushes, initiating, titrating and discontinuing oxygen, and performing basic data collection in an EMR. In addition, our nurse externs will have the chance to practice any skill for which they have received didactic and clinical instruction for an can provide evidence of a skill checklist from an accredited nursing program.
Throughout the program, our nursing externs are also able to spend time with the clinical case manager, observe procedures, or participate in other activities relevant to the patient population with which they are involved.
Banners goal when placing an RN Nurse Extern is after you Graduate and obtain your RN license that you continue as a New Grad in the same unit that you selected for your extern position. This is an amazing opportunity to grow and to obtain an amazing skill set even before receiving your RN license.
Requirements
Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program and within 1 year of graduation.
Must be able to graduate from an accredited nursing program on initial anticipated graduation date.
Current BLS certification
Must be able to pass Nursing State Boards within 90 days after graduation or in the event a second attempt is needed, must schedule and pass within an additional 60days from the first attempt
Will work a minimum of 12 hours a month; cannot exceed 20 hours per week.
Unit Description
Banner Heart Hospital is one of the three largest single standing heart hospitals in the United States
. We are a Level ll Cardiogenic Shock Receiving Center along with top STEMI receiving center, heart failure center, percutaneous coronary interventions, and all types of open-heart surgery. Banner Heart hospital has one of the largest structural heart programs in Arizona, performing greater than 150 TAVR’s per year along with mitral clips, and watchman. We perform over 600 open heart surgeries and over 1200 vascular surgeries per year.
Over the last 10 years, Banner Heart Vascular interventions have increased by 30% performing fem-pop bypass, ELG, AAA, CEA, TCAR’s, and many of interventions for vascular needs.
The Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit is a 28-bed ICU
, providing high level critical care to a large portion of cardiac and vascular patients as well as providing care for patients with implantation of Impella’s, IABP, SLED, CCRT, and EKOS catheters. We are a number one receiving center for patients needing hypothermia therapy post code. We have six cardiovascular surgeons, thirty interventional cardiologists, and nine vascular surgeons, specializing in hemodynamic monitoring and evidenced based care.

With 111 beds, we are one of the largest freestanding heart hospitals in the nation. We have also been named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals for cardiovascular care by Thomson-Reuters. Our facility includes a 28 bed cardiovascular intensive care unit that specialized in the recovery of surgical patients, cardiogenic shock, and CRRT. Our 60 bed Cardiac Progressive Care Unit specializes in fast-paced procedural recovery and our 23 bed Cardiovascular Progressive Care Unit specializes in surgical recovery.
