Overview
The Perishable Manager is the primary subject matter expert at store level for all perishable departments, including Bakery, Deli, Meat/Seafood, and Produce. The role involves overseeing these departments, ensuring operational recommendations regarding people, process, partners, and performance are communicated to the Store Manager in a timely manner, and exercising decision‑making authority in the Store Manager’s absence. The manager also assists with daily store operations, plans and prepares work schedules, supervises team members, and ensures compliance with security, sales, and record‑keeping procedures.
Work hours may include nights, weekends, and holidays, and flexibility in store assignment is required. Handling large sums of cash in compliance with company standards is part of the role.
- Greets customers and maintains good customer relations.
- Supports overall store operations and has responsibility for all perishable departments.
- Manages perishable inventories by tracking weekly sales reports and ordering products to meet customer requirements and the company’s gross profit goals.
- Assumes full responsibility for all phases of store operations in the absence of the Store Manager.
- Identifies areas for service improvement and implements process changes.
- Provides constructive suggestions, sets performance expectations, and offers developmental opportunities.
- Develops and implements merchandising plans, creates attractive displays, and promotes new and sales items.
- Supports the Store Manager in strategies to improve product placement and appearance.
- Monitors display accuracy and ensures products are properly displayed and in stock.
- Ensures proper back‑room inventory levels; maintains records to calculate gross monthly profits.
- Assists with health, safety, and sanitation issues to comply with OSHA and company standards.
- Ensures legal compliance and adherence to company policies.
- Forecasts, schedules, and monitors labor to align with sales and productivity guidelines and wage budgets.
- Oversees training of all perishable department team members to reduce turnover and improve efficiency.
- Coordinates marketing plans with other departments to meet financial objectives.
- Maintains accurate department records on performance, discipline, and sales plans.
- Performs staff duties as required.
- Communicates sales goals, department performance, and opportunities to staff.
- Manages store maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and sanitation.
- Oversees cash handling and accounting; secures the store.
- Focuses on customer satisfaction and ensures superior service.
- Maintains positive relationships with reports, peers, supervisors, suppliers, and customers.
- Motivates staff to achieve common objectives and models a positive attitude.
- Writes reports for accidents or incidents and processes them per company procedures.
- Reviews daily receipt reports and weekly/monthly cash reports.
- Handles emergencies, crises, and problems arising during the day.
- Maintains effective contact with all levels involved in store operations.
- Ensures dates on merchandise are checked and expired food is pulled off shelves per Sprouts procedures.
- Ensures specials and items advertised in flyers are available.
- Develops and trains future leaders.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- 1-3 years retail management experience.
- Preferred degree in business, management, marketing, retailing, communications, advertising, liberal arts, or related field.
- Experience and/or exposure to perishable departmental operations.
- Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Solid problem‑solving skills and decisiveness.
- Ability to work varied hours/days as business dictates.
- Proven leadership ability to build, motivate, and maintain staff.
- Forklift or power‑jack training and experience.
- Appropriate food handler’s certificate/permit.
- Ability to handle stressful situations.
- Organization and planning skills.
- Able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
- Ability to delegate effectively.
- Computer skills:
Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
