Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with Ameri Corps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources. The Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) initiative aims to increase access to the outdoors for all Americans.

The southeastern Arizona Group (SEAZ) of the NPS includes Chiricahua National Monument, Coronado National Memorial, and Ft. Bowie National Historic Site. SEAZ is committed to expanding access to park resources through accessible facilities, inclusive programming, thoughtful digital improvements, and design that serves diverse communities and visitors of all abilities. The Interpretation, Education, and Visitor Services Division of SEAZ provides frontline visitor services, interpretive programming, educational outreach, digital communication, volunteer coordination, and visitor safety information.
Role of a YES Service Member with the southeastern Arizona Group:
Stewards, in partnership with the southeastern Arizona Group (SEAZ), is seeking a service member who will help expand digital and physical access across Coronado National Memorial, Chiricahua National Monument, and Fort Bowie National Historic Sites. This YES member will strengthen website accessibility and Section 508 compliance, assess trail conditions through an access lens, and contribute to inclusive interpretive planning at prominent visitor destinations.
DUTIES
To achieve the goals of this YES position, the member will:
- Conduct access audits of the southeastern Arizona (SEAZ) parks (includes Coronado National Memorial, Chiricahua National Monument, and Fort Bowie National Historic Site)
- Identify broken links and navigation issues, identify missing alternative text and other 508 compliance gaps
- Coordinate with park staff to correct feasible issues and document improvements made
- Assist with field-based access observations along the Silver Spur Meadow Trail at Chiricahua National Monument
- Document trail grades, surfaces, visitor circulation patterns
- Identify opportunities to increase/incorporate inclusive information for waysides
- Compile field notes, photographs, and summary findings to support future planning
- Inclusive Interpretation and Exhibit Planning at Massai Point
- Document existing exhibit conditions and visitor circulation patterns
- Assist with developing conceptual plans for updated, interpretive exhibits with increased inclusion
- Research use of Universal Design best practices and identifying opportunities for tactile and/or multi-sensory elements; prepare concept summaries that support future implementation
- Visit Massai Point and document existing exhibits, access barriers, and visitor circulation patterns
- Assist park staff to develop a variety of concepts for tactile displays and multi-sensory elements
- Assist with visitor services operations, when needed
- Observe visitor access needs and frequently asked questions
- Integrate observations into project recommendations
