Job Description

Job Summary: To repair, construct and alter wooden structures throughout the district to be completed safely and within established time frames.

Employment Type: Full-time (40 hours per week)

Base Hourly: $23.31

Class/Calendar: B24,12 months

Benefits: Vacation, sick leave, holidays, retirement matched through the Arizona State Retirement System, health, and life insurance

Performance Pay: Available annually

New Hire

Experience:

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to a ten-year maximum.

New Hire

Education:

1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Repair, construct and alter wooden structures (i.e. partitions, counters, doors, prefab furniture, window frames, concrete forms, furnish door hardware and suspended ceiling systems)
  • Perform mill and cabinet work; build closets, bookcases and shelving
  • Install acoustical tiles, floor tile, baseboard and trim, ceramic tile, tack boards and marker boards
  • Operate floor sanding equipment, lathes, planes, joiners, band saws, power tools and other woodworking equipment
  • Cut glass for desk tops; cut and/or install mirrors; repair existing windows
  • Regular and on-time attendance required
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Perform repairs to various types or roof systems (i.e. build-up, shingles and single-ply)
  • May prepare working drawings from sketches
  • May direct the work of helpers
  • Help write job scopes and specifications
  • May supervise outside contractors
  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
Required Qualifications
  • High school education or equivalent required
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license
  • Minimum five years’ carpenter experience
  • Experience with and working knowledge of tools, materials, methods and safe working practices of the carpenter trade

  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) and to work well with coworkers and district personnel
  • Ability to work overtime and to change schedules with minimal notice; willingness to work non-regular hours (weekends, night shift, swing shift, holidays)

Physical Requirements
  • Carpenters work inside classrooms, hallways, and offices as well as outside on playgrounds, athletic facilities, and school exteriors
  • Work takes place in various buildings, including elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as administrative offices
  • Exposure to dust, wood particles, adhesives, paints, and other construction materials
  • Use of power tools, saws, drills, and heavy machinery; working on ladders, scaffolding, or lifts; risk of cuts, bruises, or back injuries
  • Bending, kneeling, crawling, and climbing ladders or scaffolding
  • Ability to lift and/or to move up to 100 pounds and to work at various heights
