Engineering Equipment Operator

Summary

This Engineering Equipment Operator position is located at Petrified Forest National Park in Petrified Forest, AZ. It is a permanent, full‑time appointment available to the first 100 applicants or until 06/30/2026, whichever comes first.

• Operate a variety of engineering equipment, including graders, dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, excavators, forklifts, tractors, heavy trucks, and trailers.
• Load trucks, stockpile material, clean ditches, and address storm damage using front‑end loaders.
• Manually dig ditches and holes to support heavy engineering and construction activities.
• Perform flagging duties to control traffic for road maintenance activities.
• Conduct pre‑start inspections, perform minor repairs, and carry out preventative maintenance on equipment.
• Follow all safety rules and regulations while operating in difficult terrain, congested roads, and extreme weather conditions.

No mandatory education requirement; experience may substitute for education for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must meet the Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
• Must undergo mandatory background investigation with favorable adjudication.
• Must submit to mandatory drug testing, including mandatory random testing post‑appointment.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and must submit mandatory driving records.
• Must hold a current Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License.
• Must be able to operate a four‑wheel drive vehicle and comply with National Park Service uniform standards (uniform allowance provided).
• Must be available for on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
• Must be willing to travel overnight away from home up to five nights per month and must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Must serve a one‑year probationary period during which fitness and continued employment will be evaluated.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform tasks requiring significant repetitive effort.

• Heavy physical effort required—constant reaching, bending, turning, and handling of equipment controls.
• Frequent exposure to vibration, heat, cold, noise, dust, and other environmental hazards.
• Regular lifting of up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, and positioning of equipment and tools.

• Work conducted predominantly outside; exposure to inclement weather (rain, mud, snow, extreme heat or cold).
• Use of safety equipment such as protective hearing devices and hard hats.
• Telework is not available for this position.

• Following the initial appointment, a one‑year probationary period is required to assess continued employment suitability and public interest.
• Upon completion, the appointment will terminate unless agency certification of continuation is provided in writing.
