Position: McKinney Vento & Foster Care Assistant 2026/2027

Overview

Employment Type: Full-time (40 hours per week)

Base Hourly: $17.78

Class/Calendar: A13, 10.75 months

Benefits: Sick leave, holidays, retirement matched through the Arizona State Retirement System, health, and life insurance

Performance Pay: Available annually

New Hire

Experience:

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to a ten-year maximum

Education:

1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position

Job Summary: To assist the McKinney Vento and Foster Care Liaison in identifying and enlisting homeless families to participate in educational programs; and to perform administrative clerical functions in support of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Homeless Family Liaison in identifying and placing qualifying students under McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act in an educational program
  • Work with Homeless Family Liaison to provide services for K-12 homeless students
  • Communicate with parents and school personnel opportunities available for those eligible for the Homeless Educational Program
  • Familiar with Child Welfare policies in relation to Homelessness and Foster Care and Best Interest Determinations (BID)
  • Provide follow-up services with parents/guardians, unaccompanied youth, and school administrator/designee regarding students receiving homeless services
  • Respond to inquiries from parents, school personnel and general public to provide information, resolve issues and/or refer to appropriate personnel for resolution
  • Provide translational services for parents/guardians or unaccompanied youth regarding homeless services (i.e. requests, dispute resolution, etc.)
  • Assist in the coordination with other inter-district departments as needed to provide required student services in a timely, efficient manner
  • Maintain database of eligible students and monitor services to provide accurate record keeping for district, state and federal reporting
  • Assist in the preparation of reports for district, state, and federal requirements
  • Perform a variety of routine clerical tasks for assigned personnel in support of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
  • Regular and on-time attendance required
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
Required Qualifications
  • High school education or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish (speaking, reading, writing)

  • Moderate proficiency in typing, with good accuracy; above average test battery
  • Computer proficiency to include use of basic software applications (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience with general office procedures and standard office equipment
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students, parents/guardians, district personnel, state personnel and general public
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); be tactful and diplomatic; maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines while working with frequent interruptions and minimum supervision; perform high volume detailed work with accuracy
  • Ability to work evening meetings as needed
Work Environment &

Physical Requirements
  • Typically based in a school district office or individual school campuses
  • Works closely with school counselors, social workers, teachers, administrators, and external agencies
  • Coordinates with child welfare organizations, housing services, and transportation departments
  • May require travel between school sites or community resources, sometimes using a personal or district vehicle
  • Interacts with students and families in potentially sensitive or high-stress situations
  • Basic lifting (e.g., carrying student files or school supplies under 25 lbs.)
