Overton Power District No. 5 (OPD5) is seeking a Journeyman Lineman or 4th Step Apprentice to join our field operations team in Mesquite, Nevada. We prioritize highly trained, safety focused professionals but are also committed to developing the next generation of line workers. Applications are welcome from:

Since 1935, Overton Power District No. 5 (OPD5) has provided safe, affordable, and reliable electricity to the rural communities of Moapa Valley and Virgin Valley in southern Nevada. As a not-for-profit utility governed by a seven-member elected Board of Trustees, OPD5 is deeply rooted in public service and accountability. Our team maintains a complex electric system, including:

  • 230 kV, 138 kV, and 69 kV transmission lines
  • Overhead and underground 7200/12470 V distribution lines

What You’ll Do
  • Build, maintain, and troubleshoot overhead and underground electric systems per OPD5 standards, OSHA guidelines, and the NESC
  • Perform hot-line work safely and efficiently
  • Operate trucks, bucket trucks, digger derricks, and construction equipment; respond to outages and emergencies, including after-hours callouts
  • Maintain tools, vehicles, and materials
  • Uphold high standards for public interaction, customer service, and safety
On-Call Rotation

Our linemen participate in a scheduled on-call rotation to ensure 24/7 service reliability. Requirements include:

  • Availability for after-hours outages or emergencies, including nights, weekends, holidays, and inclement weather
  • Compensation: 2 hours overtime pay for Saturday and Sunday, plus 2 additional overtime hours for holidays during the rotation, with standard overtime rates for actual call-outs

OPD5 prioritizes fair scheduling to balance work and personal life.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

We seek linemen who:

  • Understand electrical systems, utility safety protocols, and line construction best practices; communicate clearly and respectfully with team members, supervisors, and the public; stay organized, safety-conscious, and adaptable in fast-paced environments; prioritize tasks and solve problems efficiently
  • Work independently or collaboratively with professionalism
  • Maintain physical readiness for extreme temperatures, remote terrain, and emergencies
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Residency is within 30 minutes of the assigned office location
  • Journeyman Lineman certification or 4th step (topped out) in an approved apprenticeship program
  • Valid Class A CDL with combination vehicle and tanker endorsements (or ability to obtain)
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain)
  • Ability to perform Pole Top Rescue, Vault Rescue, and Bucket Rescue
  • Pass pre-employment background, drug/alcohol, and physical screening
