Primary Purpose
  • To provide instruction and assistance necessary to enable all students who are Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing in the districts of the Shared Service Agreement to achieve and function successfully in the least restrictive environment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree, with appropriate state certification in area of deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Deaf Education Certification
  • TASC Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Demonstrate a cognitive understanding of the subject matter and pedagogical skills in deaf education.
  • Possess knowledge of all district, state and federal regulations regarding the deaf and hard of hearing students
  • Exhibit excellent communication (verbal and written), public relation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of language deprivation and how it impacts Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of conflict resolution and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrate highly effective organizational and consensus building skills.
  • Understand the value of planning and demonstrate ability to develop and implement short- and long-range instructional plans based upon effective instructional strategies, knowledge of the impact of deafness, student needs and performances, the global society, the community, the curriculum, and the student’s Individual Education Plan.
  • Understand the various learning styles and show competence in developing and delivering instruction appropriate to students’ developmental needs.
  • Possess knowledge base for critiquing, constructing, and utilizing multiple forms of appropriate assessment techniques to monitor progress, modify and adapt instruction, and set goals.
  • Exhibit effective communication skills and techniques, including verbal, nonverbal, media and sign language communication that are sensitive to student differences and needs.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the policies and procedures for the MISD and the district served.
Experience
  • Have successful teaching experience in the area of deaf education for at least 3 years
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Facilitate ARD meetings and maintain Special Education documentation and folders. Monitor the collection and analysis of student data to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional materials and implementation strategies.
  • Participate in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Collaborate with campus personnel to provide instructional, behavioral, and/or compliance support related to the provision of special education and related services.
  • Support teachers in managing student behavior through classroom strategies, intervention planning, and ongoing coaching.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, transportation departments, and Shared Service Agreement (SSA) directors to ensure proper implementation of students’ IEPs and related services.
  • Conduct student and classroom observations to support curriculum modifications, IEP implementation, and instructional differentiation.
  • Provide appropriate recommendations based on classroom and student observations.
  • Stay informed on current research and share relevant findings with staff.
  • Offer curriculum support and expertise in modification strategies.
  • Assist with campus scheduling and coverage during staff absences.
  • Plan field trips and engaging learning experiences for students in the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD).
  • Conduct TTESS evaluations for RDSPD teachers and performance reviews for paraprofessional staff.
  • Teach students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) to function in the least restrictive environment using appropriate modifications.
  • Plan and deliver instruction tailored to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of DHH students.
