To support all students in their personal, academic, and career development through responsive services, guidance, and individual planning so that they can reach their full potential as adults and members of the community.

Qualifications

Counselor Certification Required

  • Master's Degree
  • Texas Teacher Certificate
  • Counselor Certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Training in child abuse, parent education, ADD/ADHD, divorce, victimization, self-esteem, social skills, conflict resolution, communication skills (SIS), Sec. 504, At‑Risk, Dyslexia, bullying, suicide and decision making skills.
  • Knowledge of collecting and reporting PEIMS data.
  • Excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic computer operations.
  • General knowledge of scheduling/registration process.
  • Ability to meet established deadlines and maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge of MISD policies and procedures.
  • Highly effective organizational and consensus building skills.
  • Knowledge of schedule change process, organizational development, conflict resolution, current mental health concerns presenting in schools, and assessment skills.
Experience
  • Successful experience as a classroom teacher.
  • Other alternative qualifications acceptable to administration.
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Accurately report PEIMS data on time (for High School Counselors).
  • Verify campus data submitted to TEA and submit corrections timely.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students.
  • Lead developmentally appropriate guidance activities, adhering to state and district guidelines.
  • Plan and conduct orientation programs for incoming students.
  • Plan and conduct scheduling and registration of students.
  • Support and consult teachers on their interactions with students.
  • Consult parents on personal, academic, and career development of their students.
  • Collaborate with assistant principals on attendance and behavior concerns.
  • Work closely with school nurse regarding student health and incidents of child abuse.
  • Cooperate with teachers in making special education referrals to ARD committee.
  • Serve as a 504 Case Manager for selected students.
  • Interpret data with students and parents.
  • Assist students and parents in locating referral sources and maintain relationships with community agencies.
  • Provide yearly professional development on child abuse recognition, reporting, Section 504, suicide prevention, and other relevant areas.
  • Help students complete financial aid and admission processes at selected colleges or universities.
  • Support students with questions on post‑secondary options.
  • Support district initiatives against summer melt.
  • Work with Advanced Academics Specialist on dual credit application process (for High School Counselors).
  • Assist with resolving conflicts with master schedule.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Clerical aides and student workers (for Middle/High School Counselors).
Working Conditions
  • Communicating well, making multiple decisions regarding students' educational, physical, and emotional well‑being, and maintaining emotional control under stress.
  • Extended hours of interpersonal relationships.
  • Prolonged and irregular hours.
  • Extended periods of computer data entry.
