Special Education Assistant – Life Skills (McKenzie) – Job

Instructional Support Compensation PlanSalary Range: $17.16 – $20.79 per Hour
Shift Type: Full-Time
Wage/Hour Status: Non-Exempt
Primary Purpose- Assist the special education teacher in meeting the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities. Support classroom program implementation, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Texas Educational Aide Certificate
- Collaborate effectively with others

- Follow verbal and written instructions

- Experience working with children preferred
- Collaborate with the teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays
- Assist with the instructional program under the direct supervision of a certified teacher, adapting to each student’s medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
- Assist the teacher in maintaining administrative records and preparing required reports
- Assist students with physical disabilities, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, and positioning
- Provide personal care to students with physical needs, including feeding, bathroom assistance, and hygiene support
- Help manage student behavior under the supervision of a certified teacher
- Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and execute instructional exercises assigned by the teacher
- Report any special needs or problems of individual students to the teacher
- Assist the assessment team by administering achievement and development tests
- Supervise students throughout the day, inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty
- Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
- Maintain confidentiality
- Attend staff development training, faculty meetings, and special events as needed
- Supervise students when the teacher is temporarily absent
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Other School Health and Related Services (SHARS) duties as assigned

- Standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling frequently
- Lifting paper, books, equipment, and students

- Moderate noise level in the work environment
