Transportation Specialist – Drafter – Bridge Inspection II, III, or IV (Job )
OverviewDallas District is hiring Transportation Specialists for the Mesquite Bridge Section. The role involves preparing plans, specifications, estimates (PS&E) and ensuring designs meet current standards. The specialist will support TxDOT in maintaining bridge safety by meeting Federal Highway Administration requirements for the Bridge Inspection Program and performing field inspections.
Responsibilities- Assist with preparing plan sheets and PS&E documents.
- Coordinate with project stakeholders and ensure design compliance.
- Perform field inspections as part of the Bridge Inspection Program.
- Develop site layouts using engineering workstations and software.
- Conduct immediate inspections of damaged bridges, recommend temporary or permanent repairs, and notify maintenance personnel.
- Plan, coordinate, and schedule bridge inspection and Bridge Inspection Program activities.
- Perform advanced technical activities related to inspection and appraisal of bridge structures.
- Provide high‑level technical assistance in resolving construction problems.
- Maintain confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports.
- Use applicable computer programs, applications, and systems.
- Interpret plans, schematics, blueprints, and maps.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline (transportation, civil engineering, or equivalent). Relevant experience may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.
Experience: 4–5 years of transportation design, construction, traffic operations, maintenance, or bridge inspection experience (full‑time or prorated part‑time).
Licenses &
Certifications:
Valid driver’s license; requires driving a state vehicle.
- Completion of a comprehensive bridge inspector training course within one year of hire and refresher training every four years thereafter.
- At least 1 year of active participation in bridge inspection for III; 2 years for IV; 1 year for II; all based on National Bridge Inspection Standards.
- Proficiency with engineering software and planning and plan preparation methods.
Transportation Specialist II: $51,158 – $81,351 (B20)
Transportation Specialist III: $54,278 – $87,046 (B21)
Transportation Specialist IV: $57,614 – $93,138 (B22)

- Subject to outdoor environmental conditions, extreme cold and heat, noise, vibration, and hazardous moving vehicles or chemicals.
- Required to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
- Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs; frequent lifting or carrying up to 25 lbs.
- Walking, standing, crouching, balancing, stooping, reaching, talking, hearing, visual acuity for computer work and operating vehicles.
- Physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
- Bridge Inspection: must have completed comprehensive training or NICET Level III/IV certification within one year of hire.
Full‑time, day shift (M‑F, 8:00 a.m.‑5:00 p.m., 40 hours per week). On‑site at Dallas District Headquarters, 4777 East Highway 80, Mesquite, TX 75150. Travel: 10 % of the time.
