Detention Sergeant

Salary: $29.41/hr.

To supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for providing services within the Police Department; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility. To participate in a variety of semi-skilled tasks involved in the processing of prisoners for detention in the municipal detention facility; to oversee the safety and well-being of all prisoners;

and to provide responsible administrative and technical support to the detention function in a stressful environment.

Detention Sergeant is a civilian position. It is subordinate in rank to all sworn supervisors and is responsible for the supervision of detention officers. General supervision is provided by a Police Lieutenant.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct & Rules of Behavior outlined in Chapter 8 of the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.

Supervise and coordinate activities of subordinates.

Act as the responsible supervisor when needed on an overtime basis.

If needed, notify a sworn supervisor of arrest reports in need of approval.

Monitor the safety of all detained persons in the custody of the Mesquite Police Department. Immediately act when the safety of any person in the custody of the Mesquite Police Department is in jeopardy.

Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise and review the work of the detention staff.

Participate in the selection of staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; recommend and implement discipline procedures; conduct performance appraisals as assigned.

Prepare various reports on activities; attend meetings.

Monitor cells regularly to determine prisoner well-being.

Use departmental computer equipment to input, review and obtain records, information and other various data.

Review program, project, and report progress. Ensure that all subordinate staff comply with departmental regulations and policies; assist with investigations regarding subordinate staff conduct; assist in monitoring career development and training for all assigned staff.

Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of law enforcement; and participate on department boards and committees.

Oversee the maintenance and repair of all assigned departmental equipment and supplies; inspect equipment regularly; maintain appropriate inventory levels of supplies and materials; and may assist in monitoring facility maintenance.

May supervise activities and programs for personnel training; maintain employee training records; monitor and conduct classes; evaluate and revise lesson plans; and review personnel progress in programs.

Participate in investigations of allegations of misconduct by department personnel.

Respond to internal or external requests for information about departmental matters.

Participate in the preparation of and administration of the department budget.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

Notarize legal documents as necessary.

Assist with processing police records as assigned.

Answers and directs public inquiries in person or on the phone.

Minimum

Job Requirements

Education:

High School Diploma or GED.

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience in law enforcement, jail operations, corrections, or a related field. Prior supervisory experience is preferred. Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid driver's license.
