Nature of Work

This is professional strategic resilience work in the Environment & Sustainability Department. The primary responsibility of the Resilience Coordinator is to support the development and implementation of resilience initiatives for the City of Miami Beach. The Resilience Coordinator acts as lead for the city’s flood mitigation grant program and other resilience planning initiatives. This position also undertakes community engagement and education activities for specific projects and, more broadly, as part of the Sustainability and Resilience team.

The coordinator reports to the Sustainability and Resilience Manager. This position requires in-person presence at the City of Miami Beach.

The preferred candidate will have excellent knowledge of and a passion for climate resilience. The candidate will also have knowledge of project or program management, sea level rise impacts in South Florida, data analysis, and be able to produce polished deliverables and recommendations in collaboration with city departments and outside entities.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties
  • Assist in managing the City’s Private Property Adaptation (PPA) Grant Program including long-term strategic and logistical planning and development; oversight of daily program activities, such as engagement with grantees and applicants, grantee program compliance, inter-departmental coordination, communications, budget tracking, and deliverable review; management and coordination with program consultant(s); and representing the program for external audiences.
  • Support the planning and coordination of the City’s resilience and strategic efforts—including plans, policies, programs, and projects—in collaboration with Miami Beach Departments, local and regional stakeholders, and international and academic experts.
  • Promote and coordinate the engagement and education of the Miami Beach community and stakeholders in resilience and sustainability events, projects, and plans.
  • Support the advocacy and representation of the resilience interests of the City in collaboration with external bodies, including the South Florida Regional Climate Compact, Resilient 305, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and local municipal offices.
  • Support additional Committees as assigned.
  • Leverages the best practices, resources, and grant opportunities through regional, national and international professional networks in the fields of climate science, resilience, and planning.
  • Works with the Information Technology Department, Geographic Information Systems, and additional departments, to evaluate progress in achieving resilience goals and the progress and success of initiatives through dashboards and other means.
  • Participates as needed in conducting interviews, collecting, analyzing and summarizing data, preparing flow diagrams, charts and tables, producing written and visual materials, developing recommendations and observations, preparing descriptive project scopes and milestones.
  • Performs related work as required.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Engineering, City Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, Public Policy, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Minimum of one year experience in strategic planning, urban design, resilience planning, climate adaptation, climate policy, emergency management, disaster response, program management, community engagement, grants management, data analysis, contract management or related management area.
  • A Master's Degree may substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Preferred: certification as a Floodplain Manager, LEED Green Associate, LEED AP Professional, or Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines (WEDG) Professional
