INRAE Presentation

The National Institute of Research for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE) is a public research institution that brings together a community of 12,000 people, with 272 research, service, and experimental units, located in 18 centers across France. INRAE is among the top global leaders in agricultural and food sciences, plant and animal sciences. Its research aims to build solutions for multi-performance agriculture, quality food, and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.

Work

Environment, Missions, and Activities

We are looking for a candidate with knowledge in plant development and/or plant responses to abiotic stresses, with possible experience in genome editing for a three-year PhD project funded by the ANR PEPR SVA MULTICRISPCROP project. The project focuses on developing a new generation of versatile and multiplexable CRISPR regulators, allowing the simultaneous modulation of multiple genes at different levels of regulation (genetic and epigenetic).

It aims to confer crops with a durable tolerance to multiple stresses.

You will be specifically in charge of:

  • Cloning a panel of nucleases
  • Evaluating their nuclear localization by confocal microscopy in protoplasts
  • Evaluating their DNA cleavage activity (multiplex PCR and amplicon sequencing)
  • Designing and validating multi-layer genetic regulators
  • Producing transformed tomato lines to apply the in planta toolbox
  • Performing phenotyping and genotyping of these plants
  • You will be responsible for setting up experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and valorizing them in the form of posters, conferences, and scientific publications.

You will join the FDFE team (Fruit Development, Flowering and Environmental Constraints) of the Fruit Biology and Pathology Laboratory located on the Villenave d'Ornon campus of the INRAE Bordeaux-Nouvelle Aquitaine center. You will benefit from the infrastructures available on this campus (greenhouses, imaging platform) and in neighboring laboratories, as well as the expertise of the FDFE team in genomics, biotechnology, and imaging.

You will benefit from a stimulating environment on a campus that brings together several leading research laboratories working on plant sciences, plant pathology, and environmental sciences, as well as state-of-the-art infrastructures for plant growth, metabolomics, and imaging. Cytometry platforms are located on the University of Bordeaux sites within 15 minutes of the laboratory. You will benefit from the scientific expertise of your direct supervisors and the members of the FDFE team in plant growth, biotechnology, cell biology, functional genomics, imaging, and bioinformatics.

Possible travel to local platforms (~15min).

Driving license required.

Required Education and SkillsMaster/Engineer (Bac+5)
  • Recommended education:
Master 2 in plant science, biotechnology, molecular and cell biology
  • Desired knowledge: A solid background in molecular biology, genome editing, and biotechnology is desired. Good knowledge in plant developmental biology and a willingness to learn functional genomics approaches are important assets.
  • Experience appreciated:
    Experience in microscopy.
  • Skills sought:
Motivation and interest in developing biotechnological tools for genome editing. Communication skills, including in English, both written and oral. Rigor and organization. Willingness to collaborate with colleagues from different scientific backgrounds (biologists, bioinformaticians).
Quality of Life at INRAE

By joining INRAE, you benefit (depending on the type of contract and its duration):
