- Conduct sanitary and safety inspections to prevent environmentally related illness and injury in facilities that generate biomedical waste.
- Investigate complaints of medical waste dumping in public areas and improper procedures at regulated facilities.
- Inspect and enforce regulations for body piercing, tattooing, and tanning facilities.
- Perform site inspections of regulated facilities (hospitals, physician’s offices, laboratories, nursing homes, etc.) and accurately complete inspection forms.
- Review applications and supporting documents for accounts to determine compliance with permitting and operating conditions.
- Initiate enforcement actions by drafting non‑compliance and warning letters and assisting with other enforcement documents.
- Consult with local, state, and private officials to enforce biomedical waste, tattooing, body piercing, and tanning regulations.
- Investigate complaints concerning improper disposal, storage, treatment, and segregation of biomedical waste and conduct clean‑ups when necessary.
- Coordinate with the Department of Environmental Protection for large spills, public dumping, or other emergencies.
- Develop manuals and training materials and provide in‑service training on 64E16, F.A.C., and related regulations.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of basic principles of environmental health or a natural or physical science (biology, environmental studies, chemistry) including scientific terminology and technology.
- Basic computer skills to execute program‑related services.
- Methods of data collection, including the ability to collect, record, and analyze technical data related to environmental health.
- Understanding and application of applicable rules, regulations, policy, and procedure related to environmental health.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community leaders and others in a stressful environment while providing quality environmental health services.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, and the ability to read and interpret written materials.
Minimum – Bachelor’s degree in a physical or natural science from an accredited college or university, a valid driver’s license, and private automobile for travel. A Certified Environmental Health Professional credential is required within six months of hiring.
