General Description
This role is for a lifeguard at city swimming pool facilities. The position involves supervising large groups, including children, to ensure safety, adherence to rules, and health standards. The lifeguard will enforce policies, maintain vigilance, respond to emergencies, and assist with routine maintenance tasks. Work schedules will vary, and tasks may be performed under adverse weather conditions. The role is performed in accordance with departmental policies and aquatic safety regulations.
EssentialJob Functions
- Enforce policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct of patrons.
- Assist in applying appropriate disciplinary action for violations and report all disciplinary problems to the Lead Lifeguard.
- Observe patrons and identify potentially dangerous or hazardous situations to prevent accidents, making quick decisions to ensure safety.
- Report potential physical hazards, unsafe conditions and complaints to the Lead Lifeguard.
- Rescue patrons in distress and administer First Aid or CPR as required.
- Prepare necessary paperwork associated with Learn‑to‑Swim classes for City and American Red Cross filing.
- Assist recreation staff in case of staff shortage or emergencies.
- Maintain water and deck areas; assist in cleaning restrooms, showers and locker rooms.
- Perform related work as required.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of approved lifeguarding and lifesaving practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of First Aid and CPR.
- Knowledge of the rules, regulations and physical layout of the aquatic facility assigned.
- Knowledge of public relations principles and techniques.
- Ability to react promptly and correctly in emergency situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Skill in swimming and administering First Aid and CPR.
- Ability to utilize approved lifesaving techniques in rescuing distressed patrons.
- Ability to detect potentially dangerous or hazardous situations at swimming pool facilities.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One (1) season of experience as a Pool Lifeguard.
- Vision standard of 20/20 corrected.
- Successful completion of the City’s lifeguard skills test.
- Certifications:
CPR, First Aid, Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor (Lifeguard Instructor Trainer certification is a plus). - Ability to work varying shifts, including holidays and weekends.
This job requires frequent sitting, standing, talking, hearing, walking, handling objects, and reaching with hands and arms. It is performed outdoors in a moderately noisy environment and may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions.
