Controller About Carbon Real Estate InvestmentsWe are a vertically integrated multifamily private equity firm with approximately $200M in assets under management, operating Class B workforce housing across the Southeast. Today, our accounting is handled by an outsourced firm. We are bringing it in-house, and this role will lead that transition and build the department from the ground up.
The OpportunityWe care about finding the right person. You might already be a Controller, or you might be a Senior Accountant/Accounting Manager ready for the seat. Title history doesn't decide the hire—fit, hunger, and follow-through do. In year one, you will audit our chart of accounts, tighten month‑end close, build variance reviews, and eventually hire and lead a small accounting team (1‑3 people) as we scale toward $500M+ AUM.
Key Responsibilities- Financial Integrity: Review monthly financial statements, own intercompany reconciliations, lead month‑end close coordination, and maintain GAAP‑compliant practices.
- Process Design & SOPs: Build, document, and enforce accounting SOPs (close calendar, AP coding, journal entry approvals). Stand up new acquisitions on our systems cleanly.
- Team Leadership: Manage the outsourced firm transition. Hire, develop, and hold a small team accountable to deadlines and process compliance.
- Systems & AI: Master our property accounting platform (Yardi Voyager) and champion AI‑driven workflows (Claude/Gemini) to reduce manual work.
- Active CPA license (or actively sitting for the exam with completion within 12 months).
- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, with meaningful time in real estate accounting (multifamily, commercial, or fund‑level).
- Hands‑on experience administering an ERP/accounting platform (COA setup, recurring entries, report customization).
- Track record of building or improving accounting processes—you build the checklist, you don’t just execute someone else’s.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivots, INDEX/MATCH, XLOOKUP).
- Willingness to work in our Coconut Grove (Miami) office a minimum of 3 days per week.
- Experience with Yardi Voyager, MRI, Real Page, or App Folio.
- Public accounting background (Big 4 or strong regional firm).
- Experience bringing an outsourced accounting function in‑house.
- Base Salary: $95,000 – $115,000 base (commensurate with experience).
- Bonus: Annual performance bonus tied to a quarterly scorecard.
- Benefits: Full medical, vision, dental; company‑paid life insurance; 401(k) with company matching; and PTO.
- Location: Beautiful, walkable Coconut Grove office near Brickell and the water.
