Construction Controller
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Construction Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations for a growing construction company. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience within a general contractor, commercial construction, heavy civil, or specialty subcontractor environment
, with deep expertise in construction accounting, job costing, Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and project financial management
.
This role will oversee all accounting functions while partnering closely with operations and project management to ensure accurate project reporting, strong internal controls, and timely financial information.
Responsibilities
- Lead all accounting and financial operations for the company.
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and project profitability reporting.
- Manage percentage-of-completion (POC) accounting and revenue recognition (ASC 606).
- Monitor job costs, committed costs, cost-to-complete projections, and project margins.
- Partner with Project Managers to review project budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.
- Review project cost reports and identify cost overruns or margin risks.
- Oversee project accounting, including:
- Job Cost Accounting
- Cost Codes
- Schedule of Values (SOV)
- AIA Progress Billings
- Change Orders
- Retainage
- Subcontractor Billings
- Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital.
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, equipment accounting, and general ledger.
- Ensure accurate balance sheet reconciliations and account analysis.
- Prepare annual budgets and periodic forecasts.
- Develop and maintain internal controls and accounting policies.
- Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, bonding company reporting, and lender compliance.
- Manage banking relationships and treasury activities.
- Produce financial dashboards and KPI reporting for executive leadership.
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and automate workflows.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- CPA preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- Minimum 5 years of Controller or Assistant Controller experience within a construction company
. - Experience working for a General Contractor, Commercial Construction, Heavy Civil, Industrial Construction, Infrastructure Contractor, or Specialty Contractor
. - Strong knowledge of:
