Overview
The City of Doral Unpaid Internship Program provides students in colleges and universities, and/or interested individuals, the opportunity to meet the City's leadership and get a first‑hand look at local government. The City will benefit from interns’ skills, talents, and new ideas, helping expand programs and services to serve the community. Internship times are flexible and interns may participate in short‑term service events, special projects, community projects, or long‑term commitments.
WorkSchedule and Supervision
Interns coordinate their schedule with City needs. The City’s hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Gain practical hands‑on knowledge and experience in community services and the relationships essential to delivering these services.
- Use interpersonal skills to achieve effective win‑win strategies.
- Work on high‑visibility assignments with executive staff and/or elected officials.
- Develop awareness of the day‑to‑day duties of executive staff and elected officials.
- Receive mentorship from experienced government administrators.
- Build a professional profile by providing excellent experience.
- Respond to public inquiries, report issues to appropriate City staff, and maintain professionalism in all interactions.
- Provide clerical support and assist with day‑to‑day tasks to ensure smooth office operation.
- Prepare reports using Microsoft Office and other specialized programs.
- File documents, perform data entry, and maintain departmental records and forms.
- Assist with planning, set‑up, and cleanup for City‑sponsored events.
- Support City employees and vendors to ensure project completion.
- Assist with special projects and events throughout the City of Doral.
- Provide administrative assistance to Executive Aides for Council members, Chiefs of Staff, or Council members.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Assignment duration ranges from 8 to 26 weeks.
- Maximum 28 hours per week.
- At least 18 years of age.
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- Actively enrolled student in a college or university with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Valid Florida driver’s license (Class
E) or valid Florida Government Identification Card. - Non‑smoker.
- Complete all City requirements, including written exam, background investigation, medical exam, and drug/alcohol screening.
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- University enrollment with GPA 3.0 or higher.
- Cover letter explaining interest in municipal government and describing knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Unofficial transcripts confirming required GPA.
- Updated résumé.
- Two letters of recommendation.
- Copy of last obtained diploma.
- Knowledge of English language structure, meaning, spelling, composition rules, and grammar. Spanish communication is a plus.
- Knowledge of administrative and office procedures and systems such as word processing and file/record management.
- Ability to work in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals and priorities.
- Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi‑line telephone systems.
- Ability to use a computer for data entry and word processing.
- Normal hearing; speak accurately and loudly; visual acuity to use computer terminal; walk between work sites.
- Ability to make rational decisions and transcribe or read extensively.
- Ability to exert up to 50 lbs occasionally, 30 lbs frequently, 10 lbs constantly.
- Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling on narrow, slippery, or unstable surfaces.
The position is scheduled for 28 or fewer hours per week. Part‑time employees are not eligible for benefits, except under specific ACA circumstances. All employees are eligible for the City’s 457 Deferred Compensation Plan.
