The Sourcing Category Manager is responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies that ensure a consistent, competitive, and high-quality supply of fresh produce across assigned categories. This role plays a critical part in supplier relationship management, market intelligence, and cross-functional collaboration, supporting the company’s operational, quality, and commercial objectives.
Success in this position requires strong negotiation capabilities, sound judgment in fast-paced environments, and active engagement with live product and operational teams to drive performance, quality, and long-term value.
Essential Functions- Develop and lead sourcing strategies that optimize supplier performance, cost efficiency, quality, and long-term value across assigned produce categories.
- Monitor market trends, competitive activity, and industry dynamics to identify sourcing opportunities, anticipate supply risks, and support strategic decision-making.
- Build, maintain, and expand strong relationships with suppliers and growers, ensuring a reliable and high-performing sourcing network across regions.
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and supply agreements that balance commercial objectives with quality, continuity, and risk management.
- Supervise and manage a designated portfolio of commodities, ensuring alignment with company standards and business priorities.
- Actively review product condition, specifications, and availability to support sourcing decisions, quality expectations, and inventory planning.
- Collaborate closely with Sales, Production, Operations, Finance, and Quality teams to ensure product flow, availability, and operational alignment.
- Oversee procurement execution, including hands-on involvement in weekly purchasing activities and category-level sourcing initiatives.
- Conduct in-person product evaluations within the warehouse to verify quality, specifications, and condition of sourced produce prior to and during procurement decisions.
- Track supplier performance metrics and implement corrective actions as necessary to maintain service levels, quality standards, and compliance requirements.
- Utilize project management and analytical tools to plan, execute, and monitor sourcing initiatives and strategic projects.
- Develop budget recommendations and monitor category-level expenditures in alignment with procurement goals and KPIs.
- Independently resolve operational and tactical sourcing issues while ensuring consistency with overall company strategy.
- Adapt to evolving business needs and perform additional duties as required to support sourcing and procurement functions.
- Responsibilities and duties may change at any time based on business needs.
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 4–7 years of experience in sourcing, procurement, supply chain, planning, or related roles within the produce or perishable goods industry.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret market data and translate insights into actionable sourcing strategies.
- Demonstrated experience in category management, supplier negotiations, and supplier relationship management.
- Knowledge of procurement legal requirements, contracting standards, and best practices.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Prior experience working closely with Sales and Warehouse/Operations teams preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook); experience with Famous Software is a plus.
