Nature of WorkThis role involves advanced technical inspections of elevators, escalators and similar equipment to ensure compliance with the South Florida Building Code and other mechanical and fire safety regulations.
Essential Functions- Inspect elevators, escalators, and other lifts by examining cables, safety devices, electrical contacts and safety interlocks.
- Review and process plans and specifications submitted for permits; check for compliance with existing codes and standards; provide a list of discrepancies with applicable code references on disapproved plans.
- Supervise conduct of permit inspections of elevators for construction use only, alteration and repair, and execute five‑year full‑load safety tests.
- Maintain files containing annual safety test dates, inspection reports, schedules, and changes in ownership, management, billing addresses and equipment alterations.
- Interpret code for contractors, builders and owners regarding violations and methods for correction.
- Perform joint inspections and follow up on complaints.
- Complete required forms and inspection reports.
- Secure evidence in cases of violation and, when necessary, aid in prosecution of violators.
- Conduct accident investigations and testify at hearings, depositions and in court as required.
- Assist contractors, the public, and supervisors in resolving complex technical problems.
- Current State of Florida Certified Elevator Inspector with a valid Elevator Certificate of Competency (Florida Statute Chapter 399).
- Valid driver’s license equivalent to a State of Florida Class E at the time of appointment (Class E or higher).
- All certifications and licenses must remain current and valid throughout employment.
- Must possess a Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) credential as prescribed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), in accordance with Florida Statute 399.01.
- Perform other related work as required.
