Position: BUILDING INSPECTOR

Overview

This position involves skilled inspections and enforcement work to ensure compliance with Florida Building Code, Miami Dade County Code, and other applicable codes and regulations related to building construction, alteration, and repair.

Employees independently conduct field inspections, routine office duties, and consult with a technical superior on complex issues. Work is subject to periodic checks and reviews.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect new construction projects for permits and conformity with building code, approved plans, and specifications.
  • Assess soil conditions, set-backs, foundation walls, vents, structural columns, steel reinforcement, structural steel sections, wood trusses, roof braces, and partitions.
  • Review and verify permits and conformity for all building alterations, major repairs, additions, and minor repairs.
  • Investigate potential non‑compliance with City ordinances or other building codes and assist in investigations of Florida Building Code violations.
  • Maintain records of inspections and investigations, and prepare reports.
  • Perform Certificate of Use inspections and respond to complaints.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Meet the requirements for a Building Inspector under Miami Dade County Code and state regulations, and be certified by the Miami Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals within one year of appointment.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license (State of Florida Class E or higher).
  • Five years construction experience in a supervisory capacity with at least two years in HVHZ or completed HVHZ training; alternatively, educational credentials and appropriate contractor licensing as listed:
    • A General Contractor’s license issued by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board.
    • A current Certificate of Competency or Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Miami‑Dade County Construction Trade Qualifying Board.
    • Associate of Science Degree in Building Code Enforcement or related curriculum plus a general contractor license or competency/eligibility certificate.
    • Current registration as an architect or engineer with construction experience.
    • Five years experience in construction industry and certification as a Building Inspector (Commercial Roofing) with a current competency or eligibility certificate.
  • Be willing to work various shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends as required.
  • Veteran Preference

    Veterans' preference is awarded in accordance with Florida State Statute 295.07. Veterans must indicate preference on the application and provide required documentation.
