Drive and Tell Story: Local News Reporter

Overview

The Miami Times and Biscayne Times in Miami, FL, are seeking a smart and aggressive writer to join their teams. The Miami Times is a historic weekly newspaper serving the Black community for nearly 100 years, and Biscayne Times is a monthly news magazine serving an affluent, general market demographic. We are looking for an ambitious reporter to produce meaningful journalism that takes time, research, and effort to develop, and who can find the angle daily news beat reporters often miss or ignore.

• Develop enterprise and watchdog stories for the monthly magazine and occasional reporting for the weekly newspaper in a fast-paced environment.
• Conduct solid research, use public records laws aggressively, work with data, and develop sources to establish trust and credibility with elected officials, staff, and other key influencers.
• Follow leads and produce high-impact reporting across coverage areas including Miami-Dade County government, City of Miami, and other municipalities north through Aventura and surrounding island communities.
• Balance depth and enterprise with competitive reporting, tailoring storytelling to satisfy readers of both publications whose audiences may only partially overlap.
• Occasionally report in real time for online platforms and social media; shoot photography to help tell stories as needed.
• Adhere to AP style and journalistic ethics; demonstrate solid writing skills (via writing samples), a can-do attitude, and a strong work ethic. Prior political coverage and experience with an established publication are preferred but not required.

• Strong writing and reporting skills; ability to produce clear, engaging journalism.
• Solid research skills and proficiency with data; aggressive use of public records laws.
• Ability to develop sources and establish trust with officials, staff, and community stakeholders.
• Excellent beat discipline and organizational skills; able to manage multiple priorities and tailor content for two publications.
• Experience with online platforms and social media is a plus; photography ability is beneficial.
• Past political coverage and experience writing for an established publication are preferred, but not required; demonstrated work ethic and examples via writing samples are essential.
