Overview
Summary Miami VA Healthcare System's Surgery Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Physician (Otolaryngology Surgeon) with expertise in Head and Neck. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program. You must be an excellent communicator and team player who is adaptable to the needs of a growing medical center.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training:
Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification - Note:
VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies include: (1) ACGME; (2) AOA; or (3) other residencies with five years of verified practice in the United States as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee - Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs)
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis; PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged
- Scope of practice for PRPs allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision; surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
- Proficiency in spoken and written English

- Physical Requirements:
Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019 administered by VA Occupational Health - This position requires light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs), light carrying (15 lbs and under), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required
- Walking and standing up to 2 hours each; kneeling up to 1 hour; rapid mental and muscular coordination; near and far vision; depth perception; color vision; hearing with or without aid; emotional and mental stability
- Working closely with others and working alone
- This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT. Eligible applicants will be referred until all vacancies are filled.
- Major duties include but are not limited to the following: perform history and physical examinations, diagnose, prepare treatment plans, and manage patients with complex illnesses of the otorhinolaryngology system; admit to inpatient care including consultations and management of inpatients
- Perform general otolaryngology procedures including tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, nasal and laryngeal endoscopy, otologic microscopy, and microlaryngoscopy
- Perform nasal and sinus procedures including septal and turbinate surgery, endoscopic nasal and sinus surgery, endoscopic image-guided sinus surgery, excision of intranasal masses/polyps, Caldwell-Luc procedure
- Perform oral cavity surgery (e.g., sialolithotomy, tongue surgery, palatal, nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal surgeries)
- Perform neck surgery (e.g., laryngeal procedures excluding total laryngectomy, thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, congenital neck masses, parotidectomy with/without facial nerve preservation, submandibular gland excision)
