Position: Physician (Cardiothoracic Surgery) Section Chief

Overview

The Miami VA Healthcare System's Surgery Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Cardiothoracic Surgeon Service Chief. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards, as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program. You must be an excellent communicator and team player who is adaptable to the needs of a growing medical center.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic

Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Education:

    Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school
  • The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • License and Registration:
    Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency Training:
    Completion of residency training in an accredited core specialty program (Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency/Fellowship) leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Board eligibility/Certification: VA-approved residencies (ACGME or AOA) or equivalent training; for faculty status, board certification may be required
  • PRPs (Physician Resident Providers):
    Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs may be appointed as PRPs (fully licensed, intermittent or fee-basis, not independent practitioners)
  • PRPs scope of practice is supervised and restricted; undergo supervision as applicable
  • Preferred Experience:

    Cardiothoracic Surgeon experience and supervisory experience

  • Physical Requirements:

    Must pass a pre-employment physical examination per VA Handbook 5019; exam administered by VA Occupational Health
  • Physical Demands:
    Moderate lifting, reaching, fine motor tasks, use of equipment, walking/standing up to 8 hours, bending, climbing, and hearing ability
Duties
  • Provide pre-, intra-, and postoperative surgical care for adult patients addressing heart and related thoracic conditions, including coronary artery disease, lung and esophageal cancers, chest wall diseases, great vessel abnormalities, and heart valve disease
  • Manage congenital thoracic and cardiac conditions, mediastinal tumors, diaphragmatic diseases, airway management, and chest trauma care
  • Perform medical evaluations, diagnose conditions, and treat injuries and diseases of thoracic organs
  • Carry out corrective and critical care operations such as chest wall tumor resections, tracheostomies, lung transplants, and pulmonary embolectomies
  • Prescribe and/or recommend laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and medications in accordance with current policies and scope of practice
  • Supervise medical students, residents, and/or fellows
  • Work Schedule:

    Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm; schedules determined and approved by the supervisor; may be required to work various shifts based on facility/patient care needs
