To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - Education:
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent in medicine or osteopathic medicine - Degree from schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year completed
- License and Registration:
Current, full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a US state/territory/commonwealth or the District of Columbia - Residency Training:
Completed residency in Anesthesiology approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification - Board Certification: VA requires board certification in Anesthesiology for faculty status; approved residencies include ACGME or AOA paths or equivalent foreign training with verified US practice
- Physician Resident Providers (PRPs):
Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA programs may be appointed as PRPs under supervision; must be fully licensed and not independent practitioners - English Language Proficiency:
Proficient in spoken and written English - Physical Requirements:
Must pass pre-employment physical per VA Handbook 5019; ability to perform duties including lifting, standing, walking, bending, and other listed activities - Other:
Ability to transfer patients/objects, may work in isolation situations, and must be able to work under stress; annual Employee Health requirements must be completed
- Provide medical management of patients rendered unconscious or insensible to pain during procedures
- Provide emergency anesthesia and airway support throughout the medical center
- Pre- and post-operative anesthesia care: general, regional, neuraxial anesthesia; acute pain management
- Vascular access procedures (arterial line placement, central venous cannulation), pulmonary artery catheterization, airway management including advanced techniques
- Consultative and rehabilitative treatments; directs/organizes multidisciplinary teams; coordinates care with other providers
- Administer moderate sedation; provide chronic and acute pain management including nerve blocks and related techniques
- Supervise medical students and physician residents (including fellows); manage work schedule and shifts as required
- Note:
Work schedule typically Monday to Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, with potential variation based on facility needs
- This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP); a student loan reimbursement program
