Job Summary

The Assistant Director for STEM Teaching Practice is a new role within FIU's Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) that supports the Provost's mandate to advance faculty and student success in alignment with university strategic priorities. This in‑person position works with the Associate Director for Gateway and STEM Partnerships to support STEM faculty and teaching assistants in implementing research‑informed, evidence‑based teaching practices that enhance learning, strengthen STEM pathways, increase student confidence, and improve persistence across STEM degrees.

Collaborating with CAT leadership and campus partners, the Assistant Director leverages teaching experience to scale high‑impact, active learning practices in high‑enrollment introductory and advanced STEM courses. The role supports faculty across STEM disciplines, career stages, and instructional modalities, contributing to FIU's goals around student success, evidence‑based teaching, and innovative pedagogy.

The Assistant Director stays current on discipline‑based education research, instructional technologies, and national best practices, translating emerging trends into accessible, actionable programming and helping foster a reflective teaching culture across the university.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver workshops tailored to STEM instruction, including problem‑based learning, inquiry‑driven lab formats, collaborative assignments, and approaches for large‑scale teaching environments.
  • Translate STEM education research into practical tools and guidance educators can apply immediately.
  • Develops and delivers practical, skill‑focused in‑person workshops in areas such as active learning, group‑based assignments, engaging large classes, competency‑based rubrics, classroom management, and productive use of learning analytics and educational technologies.
  • Supports the Associate Director for the Evaluation of Teaching and Learning by conducting teaching observations, instructional design assessments, and consultations for STEM faculty, providing growth‑oriented feedback and coaching.
  • Partners with STEM academic units to strengthen teaching across introductory sequences essential to progression into STEM majors.
  • Supports STEM lab coordinators in strengthening TA instructional preparation through coordinated needs assessment, aligned professional development programming, and mentorship of CAT Faculty Fellows contributing to TA training.
  • Collaborates with CAT colleagues to integrate AI tools and pedagogical applications into core CAT programming and resources.
  • Stays current with national and peer‑institution best practices through professional engagement, including participation in POD Network activities, conferences, and workshops.
  • Regularly attends all CAT departmental meetings, planning retreats and the like (in‑person beginning in Spring) and works collaboratively and cross‑functionally with the team.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and four (4) years of appropriate experience, or Master's degree and two (2) years of experience.
