The Family Support Advocate is a vital role designed to collaborate with various social and educational services to provide comprehensive support for students and their families. This grant-funded position is pivotal in addressing and alleviating personal, social, and behavioral challenges that may hinder student success. Reporting to the Regional Director or Executive Principal, the Family Support Advocate works progressively with staff, students, and families to ensure a nurturing learning environment.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement tailored support systems that align with the School's mission, meeting students' emotional, social, and medical needs.
- Utilize effective counseling strategies or coordinate with on-site providers to prepare students emotionally and socially for their educational pursuits.
- Establish and maintain productive relationships with staff, students, families, and the community while conducting skill-building workshops.
- Secure agreements with local colleges and universities for student internships in social work, mental health, and related fields, while overseeing clinical interns.
- Assist in the new student orientation process to ensure a smooth transition.
- Accurately document all services provided to students and families in accordance with policy and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct home visits to strengthen home-school connections.
- Coordinate community resources to effectively respond to crises.
- Lead initiatives per the School's Mental Health Plan, including mandatory outcome reporting.
- Stay informed about current trends and community service providers, sharing insights with teachers and administrators.
- Perform additional tasks as necessary to achieve educational and behavioral goals for students.
KNOWLEDGE
REQUIRED:
- Understanding of counseling and social work theories and practices.
- Familiarity with policies and laws related to student services, including FERPA and HIPPA compliance.
- Adeptness in identifying community resources and trends.
- Strong command of English language norms, including grammar and vocabulary.
- Proficient record-keeping abilities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Professional phone etiquette.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND PREREQUISITES:
- Master's Degree in social work from an accredited institution and eligibility to supervise clinical interns in accordance with local and state guidelines.
- Preferred:
Minimum three years experience working with over-age and/or at-risk youth. - Experience in educational and social services, focusing on helping students graduate and develop essential life skills.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Strong computing skills necessary.
- Bilingual candidates are preferred.
