Job Summary

The American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter facilitates effective communication between Deaf or hard of hearing students and hearing students, faculty, staff, and campus community members in a higher education environment. This position provides interpreting and translation services in academic, co-curricular, and institutional settings to ensure equal access to university programs, services, and activities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and university policy.

The ASL Interpreter works in a variety of settings including classrooms, laboratories, meetings, orientations, trainings, campus events, and virtual environments. The position requires advanced communication skills, sound professional judgment, adherence to ethical standards, and the ability to prepare for complex assignments involving specialized academic terminology.

Responsibilities
  • Provide accurate and effective ASL interpreting services for Deaf and hard of hearing students in academic settings, including lectures, discussions, labs, exams, clinicals, internships, field experiences, and advising appointments.
  • Provide interpreting services for university-related activities such as orientations, workshops, student organization meetings, interviews, commencement, trainings, and other campus events.
  • Review course materials, syllabi, textbooks, terminology, presentation materials, and related content in advance to prepare for assignments and ensure accurate interpretation of subject‑specific language.
  • Facilitate communication between Deaf or hard of hearing students and faculty, staff, peers, and other university stakeholders while maintaining the integrity and meaning of the message.
  • Develop familiarity with specialized vocabulary used in disciplines such as STEM, health sciences, law, business, and other academic areas as assigned.
  • Coordinate with faculty and Disability Resource Center staff, as needed, regarding scheduling, course expectations, and logistics that affect service delivery.
  • Adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct and applicable ethical standards, including confidentiality, professionalism, and impartiality.
  • Work collaboratively with other interpreters in team interpreting situations and support continuity of service across assignments.
  • Support the coordination of interpreting services and ensure timely communication regarding schedule changes, cancellations, and student needs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records related to interpreting assignments, schedule changes, cancellations, and service documentation in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as required or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of experience OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Departmental Requirements
  • Maintain RID certification and professional development as required for continued competency in the ASL interpreting.
  • National Interpreter Certification through Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience interpreting ASL in higher education setting.
  • Education in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Education.
