The English Department at JLA provides students with a rich understanding and love of literature as well as a solid foundation in the skills, mechanics, and craft of writing. The goal of our program is to develop an appreciation of learning, ignite curiosity and critical thinking, nurture a sense of empathy, and cultivate an appreciation for self-expression and the written word.

All of our classes are held at an honors level with an option for an accelerated level as well.

Position

We are seeking a versatile Middle and Upper School English Teacher who is as passionate as they are knowledgeable, who loves literature as much as they love working with adolescents, and who brings both intellectual seriousness and genuine joy to the classroom.

The right candidate sees reading and writing as central to forming thoughtful, articulate, and ethically grounded young people, and knows how to build a rigorous, discussion-driven culture in which students learn to interpret closely, argue carefully, and write with clarity and voice.

This teacher will be eager to teach across a range of grades and texts, collaborate closely with colleagues, and help students grow, both as students and people.

Responsibilities

• Teaching assigned English courses across middle and upper school
• Advisory, media literacy, research, service learning, or mentorship role as part of our unique Friday schedule
• Office Hours, Tutorial, and What I Need Time weekly
• Robust professional development throughout the year
• Special onboarding and leadership programming with students during the first 3 weeks of the school year
• Opportunities for athletic coaching and travel

Qualifications

• Minimum of five years of teaching experience at the middle or upper school level
• Undergraduate degree in English Literature or a closely related, adjacent discipline (such as Comparative Literature, Literary Studies, or Humanities).
• Experience with project-based learning, Harkness discussions or Socratic seminars, or other student-centered, discussion-based instructional approaches are welcomed.
• Ability to connect with and inspire students
• Contribute to curriculum development and revision in collaboration with department colleagues
• Excellent people skills and strong communication abilities (oral and written)
• Mastery of Google Workspace for Education and comfort with new technologies
• Experience working with high-achieving or gifted students is an asset
