POSITION SUMMARYUpward Bound Math and Science UBMS is a program created and funded by the US Department of Education As a designated UBMS Center the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science seeks to strengthen the math and science skills of underserved first generation high school students and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics From September 26 2026 to May 29 2027 Frost Science will host the Academic Year component of its UBMS program Saturday Academy Mentors are individuals who are problem solvers team players and proficient in the topics covered Serving primarily as facilitators of existing program curricula mentors will deliver virtual hands on exploratory science activities and lead off site excursions The following is the required time commitment for the position Full availability for a training week from September 14th to September 18thFull availability every Saturday for the duration of the program September 26th May 29thSALARY 1700hour Temporary PT
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESIn collaboration with program staff and community partners Mentors facilitate a science andor math course involving hands on activities and project based learning
Communicate classroom and preparation needs with program staff in a timely manner
Serve as a mentor role model to the special needs of underserved high school youth
Help students produce and present projects to demonstrate their acquired science knowledge
Ensure students safety during all activities
Performs other job related duties as assigned
Bachelors degree in a STEM field Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics or in the late stages of obtaining said degree Junior or Senior Minimum 2 years of teaching experience either in formal or informal settings
Minimum 2 years of mentoring coaching experience preferably with culturally diverse underserved student populations
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must have a strong background in the particular mathscience subject heshe plans to teach General scientific literacy is expected as well
Must have a friendly personable and enthusiastic demeanor toward all; embracing the multicultural differences of our students and staff is essential
Communicate well with students as well as coordinating staff and other mentors
Provide a positive and fun working environment
Strong oral and written communication skills Bilingual ability
English
Spanish English Haitian Creolepreferred
Work is normally performed indoors with some event based tasks conducted in an outdoor setting; exposure to climatic conditions is to be expected
Exposure to physical risk is primarily that of an outdoor environment such as sunburn mosquito bites etc Moderate to active physical effort can be expected as it relates to the set up and tear down of program spaces
Level 2 criminal background check clearance as required by the Florida State Department of Children & Families Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program
