The Safety organization is responsible for leadership and safety support of over 750 Peoples Gas team members, 450k customers, 14,000 miles of natural gas pipeline and 8 million fleet miles driven annually. The safety department works with natural gas service areas to establish and set safety expectations for employees and contractors working on our natural gas pipeline system; provides outreach to local municipalities;

leads the occupational safety, health, environmental compliance, and accident/loss prevention efforts for Peoples Gas.

What You Need To Succeed

Bachelor's degree in a related field with at least 5 years' experience as a safety professional or master's degree in a related field with at least 4 years' experience as a safety professional or high school diploma with at least 10 years relevant experience, with increasing level of responsibility. Minimum of 8 years related gas utility operations or related industry operations experience;

or professional safety experience. A college degree may be considered in lieu of equivalent experience. A thorough understanding of the safe work practices and programs related to the utility industry to provide technical support to business units. Familiar with federal, state and local safety regulations. Autonomous work schedule to maximize field engagement and impact. Demonstrated strong leadership, interpersonal skills, and proven experience in a participatory diverse workforce environment.

Ability to research, develop, and coordinate comprehensive safety and health accident prevention programs. High work standards and high stress tolerance. Above average oral and written communication skills in order to effectively create and present audit reports, investigation reports, safety programs, safe work practices and safe work procedures. Good planning, organizing, skills and the ability to accept, manage, communicate, and facilitate change.

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities

Develop company safety programs and procedures, become SME of safety programs, and ensure they are maintained. Natural disaster emergency response; provide safety oversight for hurricane recovery efforts for any damage to the natural gas pipeline. Lead special projects, investigation of employee injuries and near misses. Provides respiratory protection employee fit testing, inspection of SCBA, air packs and fire suits. SMS Safety management system, facilitate continued improvement with compliance and implementation of the Peoples Gas SMS.

Work closely with quality assurance team on program reviews and corrective actions. Fleet safety oversight including driver score cards/ aggression reports/ smith driver training. Investigate all vehicle collisions, prepare, and present information to determine avoidability and corrective actions. FDOT compliance for commercial motor vehicles and hazardous material transportation. Provides technical expertise to front line management to assist them with the implementation of safety programs at the operating level.

Lead safety committee for the service areas, present monthly safety meetings to service areas, conduct a minimum of 100 field safety observations. Performs routine field visits to check conditions and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and policies. Identifies and evaluates hazards and researches and recommends control strategies for the hazards. Safety training; conduct initial / refresher / gas technician apprentice program safety related training such as respiratory protection, pre-job safety briefing, trenching & excavation, smith driver, fire extinguisher, emergency response to natural gas, identification of high energy states.
