Overview
Professional work responsible for transportation planning, involving moderately to difficult technical work under general supervision. The position requires evaluation, selection, and application of standard transportation planning techniques and design of transportation projects, using sound professional judgment and independent decision-making. Limited supervision may be exercised over staff, clerical personnel, or designee, with overall review and consultation from a higher-level administrator. The role is not routine or clerical and may require evening meetings with city boards, neighborhood groups, and other agencies.
Responsibilities- Prepares and presents project outlines, selects data sources, and details plans for reports of capital improvements, elements of a master plan, traffic impact, or transportation safety analyses.
- Investigates and provides preliminary recommendations on current transportation planning projects, including the transportation master plan, transit development, bicycle and pedestrian safety and mobility plan.
- Supports studies and planning activities related to multi‑modal transportation projects.
- Designs less complex transportation projects.
- Conducts transportation and land use related research and investigates variables that may affect projects.
- Coordinates with various transportation agencies and city departments for planning studies.
- Prepares and reviews preliminary and final plans, preliminary cost estimates, and specifications.
- Prepares grant applications and monitors program activities.
- Conducts field surveys and inspections.
- Gathers and correlates preliminary data and information.
- Assists in the analysis and interpretation of moderately difficult data pertaining to the formulation of transportation plans and transit routes.
- Performs technical analysis utilizing GIS modeling tools.
- Assists in the formulation of financial and legal documents and contracts for assigned city projects.
- Composes forms that accompany requests for proposals delivered to private bidders.
- Provides routine information to the public concerning public‑works projects in progress.
- Performs other related work as required.
- Bachelor's degree in Planning, Urban Studies, Architecture, Engineering, Geography, Geographic Information Systems, or a closely related field.
- Two (2) years of transportation planning experience.
- Master's degree in an above‑mentioned or related field is preferred.
- Valid driver's license (Florida Class E required for appointment, but a license from any state may be accepted upon application).
- Engineer‑In‑Training certificate is desired.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience: beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent, and six (6) months of required experience.
