Summary

The Biomedical Engineer reports to Healthcare Technology Management within the Clinical Engineering Service at the Miami VA Healthcare System in Miami, FL. The role provides technical guidance and training in biomedical engineering and medical technology, supports the development and implementation of medical systems, and ensures compliance with regulatory and safety standards.

Duties
  • Act as a staff advisor to the Biomedical Engineering Supervisor/Chief on engineering principles and practices.
  • Develop and implement systems for physiological monitoring, laboratory automation, patient resuscitation, and medical information technology.
  • Design new systems and specify modifications to existing equipment to meet medical center requirements.
  • Provide education and training for medical, nursing, administrative, and technical staff on equipment operation and safety.
  • Train biomedical staff on IT responsibilities, including networking, and coordinate solutions to interdepartmental issues.
  • Establish controls, procedures, and monitor implementation to ensure safe and efficient use of electronic devices and patient care equipment.
  • Evaluate patient safety features of electrical equipment and assist in overseeing the patient electrical safety program.
  • Assist Clinical, Nursing, and Logistics staff in purchasing new electronic equipment by analyzing requirements, developing specifications, and evaluating devices.
  • Coordinate and direct installation of equipment and systems; verify operational integrity and reliability of new equipment.
  • Develop performance specifications for service contractors, monitor contractor work, and communicate essential contract information.
  • Interface with Services to solve problems related to contracts and recommend policy changes.
Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm.

Requirements / Conditions of Employment
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation and drug screening.
  • Selective Service registration required for eligible males.
  • Completion of an online onboarding process and submission of acceptable identification.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program required.
  • Acceptance of a 1‑ or 2‑year trial period with evaluation of performance and continued employment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline (e.g., Biomedical, Clinical, Bioengineering, Biomechanical, Electrical, Mechanical, or Biochemical Engineering) from an ABET‑accredited program, OR certification as a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE).
  • Minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑11 or a post‑doctoral fellowship in biomedical engineering.
  • Demonstrated competence in medical equipment management, curriculum development for continuing education, recall and safety alert programs, capital asset planning, subject‑matter expert support, strategic advisory, computer‑based medical systems, information security, stakeholder communication, and project management.
  • Ability to apply scientific principles, design reviews, and risk assessment to medical technology solutions.
Physical Requirements

Position is primarily sedentary with periodic physical demands such as walking, standing, climbing ladders, crouching, crawling, stooping, reaching, kneeling, lifting objects between 10 and 40pounds, and occasional travel to satellite outpatient clinics.
