Controller - Nonprofit Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management
- Lead the month-end and year-end close processes
, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting - Prepare monthly financial statements and reports for senior leadership and Board presentation
- Deliver financial analysis related to cash flow, revenue, admissions, and overall financial performance
- Supervise and develop accounting staff; assign responsibilities, set goals, and evaluate performance
- Review general ledger activity and reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Collaborate with department heads to develop annual budgets and consolidate into a master budget
- Monitor cash flow and prepare weekly cash flow projections
- Ensure accurate recording of all financial transactions, including revenue, expenses, and balance sheet activity
- Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors and tax preparers; coordinate audits and required filings
- Maintain compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
, including grant and donor reporting requirements - Oversee grant financial management, including budgeting, tracking expenditures, and reporting
- Partner with Advancement to ensure accurate donation tracking and reporting
- Coordinate with Retail and CRM (Tessitura) teams to ensure proper revenue recognition and reconciliation
- Ensure payroll allocations are accurate in collaboration with HR (People & Culture)
- Maintain business registrations and compliance (e.g., SAM.gov, Sun Biz, charitable registrations)
- Prepare required filings, including indirect cost rate proposals, tangible tax returns, and census reporting
- Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures to ensure strong internal controls and business continuity
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
- CPA required
- 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization
- Proven experience managing audits and supervising accounting teams
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, FASB regulations, and nonprofit accounting practices
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial systems (experience with MIP/Abila Fund Accounting and Microix preferred)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities
- Ability to manage complex financial data and multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to nonprofit and grant reporting
- Ability to evaluate and implement AI‑enabled tools within finance functions while ensuring data
