Chief Financial Officer

National Insurance Defense Law Firm

The Opportunity

We are a national, multi-state insurance defense litigation firm with approximately 300 employees seeking a strategic finance leader to join our executive leadership team in our Miami-Brickell office. While prior CFO experience is highly valued, we are also open to exceptional candidates who are ready to step into their first CFO role, particularly those who have operated as a VP of Finance, Director of Finance, Controller, or similar senior leader within a law firm or professional services environment.

This is a high-impact, strategic role for someone who understands the economics of insurance defense and professional services and can partner effectively with firm ownership and senior leadership. The CFO will be responsible for firmwide financial strategy, performance management, and operational finance across a geographically dispersed organization. The ideal candidate brings strong executive presence, deep financial acumen, and the ability to translate financial data into clear, actionable guidance for partners.

This is not a remote position. Must be able to commute or relocate to Miami.

Key Responsibilities
  • Executive Financial Leadership:
    • Serve as a strategic advisor to firm leadership on financial performance, profitability, and long-term planning.
    • Lead annual budgeting, rolling forecasts, and multi-year financial planning.
    • Present clear, concise financial reporting and insights to partners and executive leadership.
    • Support strategic initiatives including geographic expansion and lateral growth.
  • Insurance Defense Economics & Performance
    • Oversee financial performance of insurance defense matters, with a focus on utilization, realization, collections, and margin management.
    • Monitor rate structures, carrier guidelines, write-offs, and profitability by client, practice group, and office.
    • Identify revenue leakage and develop strategies to improve margins while remaining competitive in the insurance defense market.
    • Partner with operations and practice leadership to align staffing models with case economics.
  • Accounting, Cash Flow & Controls:
    • Oversee all accounting and finance functions, including billing, AR/AP, general ledger, trust accounting, and monthly close.
    • Manage cash flow, working capital, and banking relationships.
    • Ensure strong internal controls and comply with applicable regulations.
    • Lead annual audits, tax filings, and coordinate with external advisors.
  • Partner Economics & Compensation Support:
    • Provide financial analysis and support for partner compensation models, capital accounts, and draws.
    • Support leadership in evaluating compensation structures and equity considerations.
    • Maintain discretion and professionalism in all partner-related financial matters.
  • Multi-State Operations & Infrastructure:
    • Oversee financial implications of multi-state operations, including payroll, taxes, and benefits.
    • Partner with HR and Operations on benefits strategy, workforce planning, and compliance.
    • Support finance, billing, and technology system enhancements to improve efficiency and scalability.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance and accounting team.
    • Build scalable processes and a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field (CPA and/or MBA preferred).
  • 5+ years of progressive financial leadership experience.
  • Prior experience in a law firm is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of insurance defense or rate-driven litigation practices.
  • Experience supporting multi-state operations and distributed work forces.
  • Strong knowledge of law firm financial metrics, billing practices, and partner economics.
  • Candidates without prior CFO titles are encouraged to apply if they have operated at a senior finance leadership level and are prepared to step into a firmwide executive role.
Ideal Candidate Profile
  • Strategic, business-oriented finance leader with strong executive presence.
  • Comfortable advising and influencing firm owners and senior partners.
  • Able to communicate complex financial concepts clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
