The Finance Manager is responsible for overseeing Be Strong International's day-to-day financial operations while contributing to the organization's long-term financial strategy and sustainability. This role requires active involvement in accounting, budgeting, grant management, compliance and internal controls, as well as collaboration with senior leadership and cross functional teams to support informed decision-making. This role requires strong nonprofit accounting expertise and fiscal management, the ability to build strong scalable systems, and a commitment to stewardship in support of a mission-driven, values-based organization.
Manager to list the top 5 critical duties for this role (these will be used to qualify/measure a new hire during their probationary performance review).
Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, bank and credit card reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance, ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP.
Lead, develop, manage, and monitor the organization's annual operating budget in collaboration with the COO and leadership team; track budget-to-actuals, prepare forecasts, profit and loss reports, and provide variance analysis and recommendations to guide leadership team. Support program team leaders in managing budgets and understanding financial data and projections.
Ensure grant and contract funds are tracked, allocated, and reported accurately in compliance with funding agreements and organizational policies. Process amendments as needed. Provide insights and strengthen systems and processes that align with grants management and financial accountability.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for various stakeholders (board of directors, funders, leadership team, etc.) support annual agency and grant funded program audits, prepare 990, indirect cost rate agreement and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local nonprofit financial regulations. Ensure proper internal controls.
Continuously evaluate, present and improve financial processes and systems to support organizational growth. Implements under the guidance of the COO, efficiencies that reduce manual processes and additional costs to improve accuracy and can prepare the organization to scale its programs and social enterprise.
- Support the development and maintenance of financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Collaborate with program leaders to align financial planning with program goals and grant requirements.
- Identify financial risks and provide mitigation strategies.
- Develop and improve systems that reduce manual work and support organizational growth.
- Translate financial information for non-financial staff to promote transparency and shared accountability.
- Participate in leadership meetings and special projects related to organizational growth and sustainability.
- Support continuous improvement of financial operations as the organization continues to scale.
- Directly oversees Grant Accountant, Bookkeeper or other assigned roles.
- Assists COO to build dashboards that allow leadership and cross team collaborators to view programmatic or agency-wide financials at a glance.
- Integrate financial data with CRM systems to improve efficiency as needed.
- Present quarterly financial presentations to the Board of Directors and additional stakeholders as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in nonprofit finance or accounting.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a supervisory, lead, or management role
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit fund accounting, GAAP, and grant compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated experience in budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audits, and restricted funds management.
- Proficiency in Quickbooks, Excel, pivot tables, XLOOKUP, data visualization and AI tools (Power BI, Zapier, etc).
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders and collaborate across departments.
- Capacity to identify financial risks, optimize processes, and provide actionable recommendations for business growth.
