Position: Director, Federal Tax (Private Client Services)

About Alvarez & Marsal Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) is a global consulting firm delivering consulting, litigation, and performance improvement services. We work with private companies, owners, and high net worth individuals to solve complex tax and financial challenges.

The Team

We are expanding our Private Client Services (PCS) practice, which serves private companies and high net worth individuals. We need a Director to lead tax and consulting projects for this client base.

How You Will Contribute
  • Manage tax and consulting services projects for high net worth individuals in the areas of individual income tax, wealth transfer and succession planning, and international tax.
  • Demonstrate extensive technical skills with tax compliance assignments for individual tax clients, working proficiently with forms 1040, 1041, 709, and FinCEN 114.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team, assisting with tax‑planning responsibilities for individual clients.
  • Identify, research, and provide analysis on a wide range of complex tax issues.
  • Manage risk, resources, staffing and financial performance for multiple engagements at once, including billing, collections and project budgets.
  • Identify key tax issues and accurately quantify the impact in clear, concise, and thoughtful analysis.
  • Build client relationships and demonstrate a working knowledge of client businesses.
  • Conduct day‑to‑day management of accounts to ensure delivery of timely and accurate work product.
  • Supervise, develop, mentor, and motivate Associates, Senior Associates and Managers, providing performance feedback and fostering a team‑based atmosphere.
  • Manage workload and deadlines for Associates, Senior Associates, and Managers with a focus on quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the project teams.
  • Demonstrate commitment and desired behaviors while working with others who have diverse experiences, skills and perspectives.
  • Support business development efforts – identify opportunities for add‑on work, thought leadership, new client pitches, and process optimization.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • Five or more years of experience focused on tax planning for high net worth individuals, reviewing client work papers, and preparing income tax returns.
  • CPA or licensed attorney qualification.
  • Proven experience leading teams while managing multiple work streams.
  • Demonstrated success as a trusted tax and business advisor: building relationships, addressing client needs, and delivering high‑quality deliverables.
  • Passion for training and mentoring staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to establish credibility and influence clients.
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Office products, especially Excel.
  • Experience with GoSystems, One Source, and research software preferred.
  • Ability to handle several projects simultaneously and manage deadlines effectively.
  • High motivation to learn and grow, actively identifying trends and new ideas for enhancing solutions and approaches.
  • Detail‑oriented with strong organizational skills.
Benefits & Compensation

Salary range: $130,000–$175,000 annually, dependent on education, experience, skills and geography. A&M offers a discretionary bonus program based on individual and firm performance. Regular employees working 30 or more hours per week are also entitled to A&M’s fringe benefits, including healthcare plans, flexible spending and savings accounts, life, AD&D, and disability coverage. Eligible employees receive a 401(k) retirement savings plan with annual discretionary contributions.

Paid time off includes vacation, personal days, 72 hours of sick time, ten federal holidays, one floating holiday, and parental leave. Additional benefits are available based on tenure and role type.
