Acting Inspector General-Oversight & Investigations Leader

Responsibilities

• Provide technical guidance for inspections across the SOUTHCOM Area of Responsibility (AOR) to ensure all compiled inspection findings meet regulatory requirements, identifying root causes of deficiencies and targeting fraud, waste, and abuse.
• Oversee highly sensitive investigations and inquiries concerning character, suitability, and whistle blower reprisal allegations, evaluating evidence and witness testimony to compile legally substantiated reports.
• Serve as the Acting Command Inspector General, representing the office with full authority to establish the agency’s position at general officer briefings;
  DoW, executive branch, and congressional inquiries, and high‑level interagency meetings.
• Perform personnel management and administrative oversight for a joint office to manage the IG program’s operating budget, execute strategic recruitment, conduct performance evaluations, and conduct internal control reviews.
• Manage SOUTHCOM’s Intelligence Oversight program, blending systemic inspections, investigations of questionable intelligence activities, and training initiatives to guarantee all intelligence operations conform to federal executive orders.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
• Pre‑employment screening and random testing thereafter, including testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on‑duty accident.
• Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 20% of the time.
• Attendance and graduation from the Joint Inspector General Course.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Specialized

Experience:

One year of specialized experience which includes:
1) Planning, coordinating, and conducting complex general, special, or follow‑up inspections using systemic methodologies to evaluate organizational compliance, mission capability, and effectiveness;
2) Conducting and overseeing sensitive investigations and inquiries (e.g., whistle blower reprisal, fraud, waste, and abuse), including gathering evidence, evaluating testimony, and drafting legally and technologically substantiated reports;
3) Applying advanced analytical techniques to identify root causes of systemic organizational problems and developing comprehensive recommendations for corrective action or policy revision;
4) Evaluating operational and administrative programs to ensure strict compliance with federal, DoD, or equivalent executive‑level regulatory guidance (such as Intelligence Oversight). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS‑13).

Time in Grade Requirement:
Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS‑13).
