MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST III - 1
Performs all aspects of microbiological testing of enteric, gonococcal, and miscellaneous bacteria.
Coordinates and oversees testing in microbiology, performs monthly reports, and trains staff in microbiology sections.
Oversees maintenance of up-to-date inventory of supplies, reagents, and media.
Performs testing for chlamydia/gonorrhea on automated equipment.
Performs quality control and quality assurance activity, including proficiency testing.
Assists in Laboratory Response Network (LRN) testing of bioterrorism agents as a member of the lab surge team, as required.
Accession specimens received into Lab Ware computer system, records results for review, and approves results in the Lab Ware system.
Prepares and discards daily medical waste following Bureau of Laboratories Biowaste protocol.
Participates in on‑call duty assignments with other staff to provide telephone coverage for the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories. The incumbent will be available to accept all incoming calls after‑hours on weekdays, weekends, and holidays; assess the urgency of each call; and provide an appropriate response. On occasion, a call dealing with selected urgent diseases or a community‑wide emergency will require extensive follow‑up and coordination with other departmental units and other organizations/agencies that is beyond the scope of the on‑call assignment.
Attends staff meetings and required training, and follows Bureau of Laboratories and Department of Health safety policies.
Performs other lab‑related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of terminology, principles, and techniques used in analysis and testing.
- Knowledge of procedures, techniques, and equipment used in laboratory testing and analysis.
- Skill in the use of laboratory equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.
- Minimum:
Medical Technologist or Public Health Licensure. - Preferred:
Bachelor of Science.
