SENIOR HEALTH EDUCATOR -
The employee is responsible for initiating, coordinating, and providing tobacco prevention and education activities throughout Miami-Dade County under the supervision of the Health Education Program Manager (HEPM). The Senior Health Educator (SHE) will assist the HEPM with the development and submission of the tobacco prevention work plan focusing on preventing the initiation of tobacco use among youth and young adults, promoting cessation, and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke.
The employee is responsible for initiating, coordinating, and providing health promotion and public health education to businesses, community organizations and the Health Department. Educates and consults with businesses and community organizations on the benefits of tobacco free policies and providing information on the Cessation Access initiative. Provides consultations to organizations interested in developing new or revising existing cessation access policies and assists with the creation and implementation of policy change.
Conducts assessments of local organizations, making and maintaining contact with local organizations and tracking progress towards policy change on a quarterly basis.
Works with local partners to educate local municipalities and state government about the benefits of smoke free environments and the Tobacco Free Public Spaces initiative. Provides consultations with entities interested in developing new or revising existing tobacco-related policies and assists with the creation and implementation of policy change. Conducts assessments of environments with policies and tracking progress towards policy change on a quarterly basis.
Participate in meetings, trainings, and health promotion events as required for the initiative.
Responsible for assisting the Health Education Program Manager in preparing and facilitating meetings of the Consortium for a Healthier Miami Dade, ensuring that Consortium programs are aligned with tobacco initiatives. Participates in the activities of the Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade by attending and assisting at monthly meetings and events. Support/facilitate meetings with the Cessation Access subcommittee. Assists in recruiting partnership members.
Provide the Health Education Program Manager with information to update the Consortium and county health department website on tobacco issues. Develops culturally sensitive educational presentations on chronic disease and healthy lifestyles, with a focus on the effects of tobacco use and secondhand smoke. Collaborate with other staff members on the development and delivery of health promotion and health education materials.
Collaborate with the Health Education Program Manager in the development of media campaigns and county-wide activities.
Collect and analyze data to ensure program outcomes. Enter quarterly progress reports into the Automated Tobacco Activity Collection System (ATACS). Submit regular reports as required to ensure appropriate progress on work plan, agency objectives and as required to ensure compliance with State Guidelines. Provide written justification for procurement of services/products to promote initiatives for tobacco prevention and education.
Promotes the Florida Quitline and refers community members to tobacco cessation services offered at the local level. Keeps track of referrals for cessation services. Promotes empowerment by increasing skills, knowledge of tobacco issues and prevention. Prepares and disseminates press news releases and other information to communities through the FDOHMD Office of Communication and Legislative Affairs. Promotes a tobacco-free lifestyle in the community.
Represent the County Health Department and the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program on local committees, boards, and coalitions, as assigned by the Tobacco Prevention Specialist. Attend scheduled training as required. Local and regional travel as required. Assures that tobacco prevention advocates receive training on effective tobacco prevention and control strategies and the program’s mission, goals, and objectives.
