VA Careers - Licensed Practical Nurse:

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) provide essential nursing care to veterans in various settings, including inpatient units, mental health, spinal cord injury, and community living centers. They assist with daily living activities, monitor vital signs, collect specimens, and administer medications under supervision. LPNs also perform routine procedures such as immunizations, nebulizer treatments, and TB testing while maintaining accurate documentation.

As LPNs advance from GS-3 to GS-6, their responsibilities expand from basic technical tasks under close supervision to performing complex procedures with greater independence. Higher-grade LPNs participate in care planning, patient education, and emergency interventions, and serve as preceptors for junior staff. GS-6 LPNs demonstrate technical proficiency, exercise judgment in prioritizing care, and assist with specialized diagnostic tests, ensuring safe and effective patient care

Major duties of the Licensed Practical Nurse position includes, but are not limited to:

* Taking and monitoring vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate.

* Collecting and labeling specimen samples for laboratory analysis.

* Administering medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous) as permitted by policy and under supervision.

* Performing routine immunizations, visual acuity testing.

* Preparing and administering injections, monitoring medication doses and patient responses.

* Establishing and documenting patient treatment plans under RN or physician supervision.

* Performing catheter care, irrigation of Foley catheters, and insertion/discontinuation of urinary catheters.

* Observing and reporting changes in patient condition, including subtle physical and emotional changes.

* Responding to emergency situations, assisting in resuscitation procedures, and ensuring environmental safety.

* Maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and preparing examination rooms for patient care.

* Facilitating patient referrals, follow-up appointments, and discharge preparation.

* Documenting all patient care activities, medications, and treatments in electronic health records.

* Participating in patient education and care planning conferences; providing instruction on disease processes and treatments.

* Serving as a preceptor for orienting and training new LPNs and nursing assistants.

* Performing support duties for complex diagnostic tests and specialized procedures, including preparation and handling of instruments.

* Actively seeking educational opportunities and sharing knowledge to advance nursing practice.

* Fostering a supportive and compassionate environment for patients and families.
