Manager, Medical Technologists
Provides leadership and management for clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. Plans and implements overall laboratory policies, procedures, and services for the assigned unit. Ensures efficient and effective departmental operations, including department quality control and compliance adherence. Oversees personnel, coordinates services with reference laboratories and vendors, and collaborates with other laboratories and departments to provide high‑quality integrated patient care.
Develops monthly and quarterly reports and actively improves laboratory functions.
Core Job Functions
- Manages teams of medical technologists responsible for performing basic tests and laboratory procedures; communicates general information and policy changes to personnel.
- Ensures proper laboratory equipment is in place; monitors performance, diagnoses issues, initiates repairs or service requests.
- Plans, prioritizes, and directs work activities to ensure smooth operations.
- Investigates and resolves problems concerning patient testing and procedures.
- Assists with interviewing and selecting new staff; participates in the progressive disciplinary process and performance improvement plans.
- Participates in the design and implementation of new procedures and instrumentation.
- Monitors quality control, proficiency testing, and implements corrective actions.
- Coordinates continuing education activities and events.
- Monitors employee compliance with regulatory and departmental guidelines.
- Assists in developing strategic goals and objectives for the section.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates training programs and competency assessment tools.
- Reviews, revises, and implements standard operating procedures.
- Establishes and continuously assesses internal controls and compliance with University policies.
Core Qualifications
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. - Experience:
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience. - Certification and Licensing:
Clinical Laboratory Supervisor. - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Operational Management:
Optimizes day‑to‑day operations. - Organizational Development:
Implements strategies to improve effectiveness. - Financial Oversight:
Knowledge of financial operations. - Team Leadership:
Builds a cohesive and productive team. - Technical Proficiency:
Skilled in office software and relevant applications. - Communication:
Strong verbal and written skills.
- Operational Management:
Department Specific Functions
- Ensures SOPs comply with FDA, CLIA, state requirements, Joint Commission, etc.; manages FDA reportable events, errors, deviations.
- Performs self‑inspection, audits, and educates the clinical team.
- Analyzes data, generates quality indicator graphs, conducts investigations, and prepares corrective action plans.
- Ensures staffing plans meet departmental needs and workflow efficiency.
- Test Method Validation:
Ensures quality across pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical stages. - Works with the laboratory director and QA team to incorporate a comprehensive quality and training program.
- Maintains licensing, accreditation, activity menus, and proficiency testing.
- Prepares responses to citations or accreditation inquiries and participates in continuous improvement projects.
- Adheres to all institutional policies and safety procedures.
