Ophthalmic Technician - Full Time Refractive/LASIK Bascom Palmer Eye Institute

The University of Miami's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has a full‑time opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 1 (OT1) in Miami, Florida. The role requires comprehensive knowledge of eye‑care theory, principles, and practice, performing clinical testing, and documenting findings in the electronic medical record (EMR).

Job Functions
  • Support providers with chart documentation and patient‑centric care.
  • Adhere to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.
  • Comply with regulations and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Follow best practices for patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
  • Attend assigned educational courses for ophthalmic personnel.
  • Demonstrate high‑quality work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
  • Meet daily productivity goals.
  • Ensure all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation operates correctly.
  • Participate in assigned clinical research and maintain required certifications.
  • Organize and stock rooms for daily clinical activities.
  • Travel to satellite eye centers as necessary.
  • Work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Perform organizational duties as assigned.
  • Prepare patients for intravitreal injections (IVI).
  • Facilitate ocular motility exams.
  • Support virtual‑care encounters and examinations.
  • Perform and document the following items in the EMR:
    • Reason for visit
    • Tangent screen visual fields
    • Chief complaint
    • Basic ocular motility
    • History of present illness
    • Pupillary evaluation
    • Basic review of systems
    • Ocular surface assessment
    • Review systemic and ocular medications
    • Eye drop administration
    • Record allergies
    • Intraocular pressure (Goldman, Tono‑Pen, I‑Care)
    • Pharmacy information
    • Pachymetry
    • Family, social, medical, and ocular history
    • Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses
    • Visual acuity at distance and near
    • Color vision test
    • Lensometry
    • Stereopsis test
    • Manual refraction
    • Sensorimotor exam
    • Confrontational fields
    • Automated & manual perimetry
    • Humphrey visual fields
    • Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields
    • Amsler Grid visual fields
Qualifications
  • Education:

    High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification and Licensing:
    Refer to the department's specific functions and requirements.
  • Experience:

    Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience.

    • Professional appearance and effective verbal and written communication.

    • Competent in ophthalmic subspecialty patient workups using EMR telehealth platforms.
    • Prepares patients for intravitreal injections.
    • Function as an ophthalmic scribe.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Department Specific Functions Clinical Functions
  • Perform all refractive evaluations, including documenting medical history, testing visual acuity, depth perception, color perception, retinoscopy refraction (manifest and cycloplegic), tonometry, slit‑lamp assessments, intraocular pressure measurement, and axial length measurement using ultrasound.
  • Conduct additional tests and measurements as requested by the physician, such as corneal topography and visual field testing.
  • Administer drops for anesthesia, dilation, or medication.
  • Educate patients on refractive procedures.
  • Collaborate on refractive clinical flow with administrative staff and providers.
Surgical Functions
  • Educate patients on pre‑ and post‑operative instructions.
  • Record pre‑ and post‑op vitals.
  • Preform specialized imaging tests for patients.
  • Prepare patients for surgery and perform mandatory prop preparations.
  • Order and maintain clinical supplies; assist in all laser procedures, both elective and medically necessary.
  • Activate and deactivate lasers on J&J and Alcon platforms; identify proper key cards and document usage.
  • Troubleshoot and calibrate laser equipment daily to assure proper surgical parameters.
  • Perform sterilization of the laser room, equipment, and instruments.
  • Input patient data into the laser system and monitor gas supply, changing tanks when necessary.
  • Document procedures in a logbook and prepare surgical charts and nomographs for providers.
