The Billing Specialist is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations of the Billing Department and timely and accurate professional billing. Role is also responsible for ensuring compliance with all organizational, statutory, and federal, contractual obligations, regulations, and standards. This position serves as “super-user” for billing systems, including but not limited to maintaining edits, bridge routines, and establishing and maintaining billing system vendor and IT relationships.

Job Duties /Responsibilities
  • Provides daily administration and coordination of billing functions
  • Supports billing and collections, and data processing to ensure accurate billing and efficient account collection.
  • Reviews reports, works queues, monitors department’s productivity, recommends improvements to enhance the unit’s productivity and meet goals.
  • Serves as the practice expert and go to person for all billing processes, limited coding questions and help resolve issues.
  • Maintains contacts with other departments to obtain and analyze additional patient information to document and process billings.
  • Supports and performs the operations of the billing department including but not limited to; medical coding, charge entry, claims submissions, payment posting, accounts receivable follow-up, and reimbursement management.
  • Audits current procedures to monitor and improve efficiency of billing and collections operations.
  • Ensures that the activities of the billing operations are conducted in a manner that is consistent with overall department protocol, and follow Federal, State, and payer regulations, guidelines, and requirements.
  • Participates in the development and application of operating policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and interprets operational data to assess need for procedural revisions and enhancements.
  • Participates in the design and implementation of specific systems to enhance revenue and operating efficiency.
  • Assists in recruiting, hiring, training, disciplining, and recommend termination of Medical Billers as required to maintain a skilled, enthusiastic, and productive workforce.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and modified at manager’s discretion.

Skills And Abilities
  • Good communication skills, oral and written
  • Ability to analyze data and work independently.
  • Must be able to develop and maintain a professional, service-oriented working relationships with physicians, insurance companies and healthcare providers.
  • Must be able to understand and comply with policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of insurance guidelines, Medicare, Medicaid and Commercial Payers.
  • Ability and willingness to travel locally, regionally and/or nationally up to 10% of the time; flexible to work weekends as needed
  • Spoken and written fluency in English
Education And Experience Criteria
  • Associate degree required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent degree within specific field preferred. Two (2) years’ experience in a Patient Accounts setting required.
  • Minimum three years’ experience with billing regulations, including but not limited to certifications, authorizations, insurance assignments, coordination of benefits and compliance.
  • Medical Billing and coding Certification required or ability to obtain within 1 year.
Pay Range
  • $22.0 - $31.42 Hourly

The posted pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for this position. Final compensation will depend on a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, education, geographic location, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for a bonuses or commissions.
